Shall We Dance?

Monday, February 3, 2014

It seems like every Friday I'm so glad to see the work week come to a close, and after early mornings and late nights, this one was no exception. I dipped into the emergency supply of Campari I have stashed at the office before heading home for a quiet, cozy night in with my sweetheart. We ordered Indian food, put on our pjs and were fast asleep before the streetlights flickered out.

We were both up early on Saturday, so we met a friend at our favorite coffee shop and nearly bought out their entire supply of empanadas. I had to head to the office for a bit that morning, but made it home as quickly as possible to indulge in my favorite weekend activities–list making, menu planning and grocery shopping. After my errands, I curled up with my laptop in the living room so I could listen to John practice, but before I knew it, it was time to get gussied up! I'd gotten John tickets to SF Ballet's production of Giselle for Valentine's Day, so I put on my highest heels and we headed downtown, making a quick stop for a scrumptious and spicy Chinese supper first. We made it to our seats just in time for the curtain and remained in a state of balletic rapture from beginning to end. We headed home and curled into bed with a nightcap rather than braving a buzzing Hayes Valley bar, and feel asleep with visions of Wilis dancing in our heads.

John let me sleep in a bit of Sunday morning, and surprised me with breakfast in bed; he'd roasted fingerling potatoes, made my favorite avocado toast and topped it with a perfectly poached egg. After a quiet start to the day, we took care of domestic concerns (laundry, sweeping, scrubbing) with pauses for practice or reading–which was perfect, since the blustery day had neither of us in the mood to go out. We skipped the Super Bowl (and Renée Fleming's rendition of The Star Spangled Banner–dying to hear what you thought!) in favor of a brewing project, some inspiration, a bit of Ballet Beautiful for me and a few more hours of practice for John–he has some upcoming performances that require lots of focus, and I figured we could always drink beer and eat chicken wings next month. We made homemade potato gnocchis (which ended up an inedible disaster!) and a simple tomato sauce that was perfect with some hastily cooked penne, and curled up with an episode or two of The West Wing. Then we turned in early in preparation for another big week ahead!

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend? Did you watch the big game, start a new book or dream of a vacation destination? John and I started plotting our summer trip this weekend!

  3. Renee Fleming was wonderful! We played catch up this weekend and get to play hooky today. Thank goodness, because all I really want to do is reread The Goblet of Fire!

  5. Sounds like a wonderful weekend. I went to a play and met an old friend for dinner, where we discussed summer trips to Europe. We are planning on meeting up in Paris and possibly flying to Prague. I can't wait to see where we wind up!

    1. We're the worst–we picked up programs but not that evening's insert! I will say that she (whoever she was) was MAGNIFICENT. Like audience-whooping, spontaneous cheering magnificent.
