Saturn

Friday, February 28, 2014

Tiki almost always means rum, but this gin-based cocktail is a winner–and one of John's favorites to pull out when you need a bit of summer in a glass.

Saturn

1 1/4 oz gin
1/2 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 oz passion fruit syrup
1/4 falernum
1/4 orgeat syrup

Combine ingredients with ice in a blender; blend until smooth. Pour into a glass and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Notes: The Saturn is rich enough to withstand a good beating in the blender (as so many of my favorite vacation drinks are), but you can also make this cocktail in a shaker with crushed ice. If you're willing to commit to a Tiki weekend, you can actually make your own falernum and orgeat syrups–but Fee Brothers' syrup should be relatively easy to find, and our favorite Small Hand Foods can be replaced by the almond syrup you see at coffee shops. As for gin, use something that's lighter on the juniper–with so many strong flavors, there's no need to throw another one in the mix. Cheers!

This week I'm loving artfully decorated confections like this one by Tampa-based Hands On Sweets, a big announcement from my old gig, and spending lots of quality time with my guy–he's on his way to Pennsylvania today and won't be home 'til Monday evening! Tell me, what are you loving this week?

Briana & Ian

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Briana and Ian dreamed of a destination celebration where their nearest and dearest could get away for a weekend and celebrate without worrying about their return flight; The Southernmost House in Key West, only a few hours away from their home in Palm Beach, proved to be the perfect setting for their elegant beach wedding. The Victorian estate inspired Briana and Ian's pastel color palette, and the cheeky invitation suite created by the bride that invited the couple's 60 guests to celebrate with them.

After a Champagne breakfast with her maids, Briana slipped into a frothy lace and tulle gown by Enzoani and a pair of sky-high patent leather peep toes from Steve Madden. An intricate updo by Fabiola Cristina looked elegant with square-cut diamond studs and a classic veil. Briana's bridesmaids wore coordinated J.Crew, Alice + Olivia, Adrianna Papell and Donna Morgan gowns, and carried diminutive versions of the bride's ivory bouquet by Simply Unique by Lenka

After an alfresco ceremony at the Key West Lighthouse, the newlyweds and their guests headed to The Southernmost House, arriving just in time for a romantic pink sunset. There was dinner and dancing beneath a tent on the sand, and as the evening continued, Ian draped his suit coat over a wooden Chiavari chair and to dance with his beautiful bride.

Many, many thanks to Jessica Lorren for sharing these beautiful images with me; I so needed to get away to Key West this week! Tell me, what's your favorite image from this gorgeous celebration?

I thought we could all use a little warm weather this week (I've been dreaming almost non-stop about a tropical getaway), so this week you're in for some peachy pretty that would look perfect by the beach!

I left my new office at a positively reasonable hour–which after the last few weeks felt almost unimaginable–and headed straight home to my guy on Friday night. We curled up on the couch with an episode of House of Cards before heading to dinner with our regular Friday night date and his mom; over Maharajas (John bought every last bottle of BevMo's Van Ness store) and Pinot Noir, we caught up on AJ's performance schedule, my new gig and the boys' big dreams. After our spicy feast at Masala, we headed across the street to Holy Gelato for burnt espresso and sweet ice cream, and then John and I made our way home, eager to watch more of House of Cards. Of course, we fell asleep about a half an episode in, but not before gasping at Frank's latest misdeeds.

We were both up early on Saturday morning, while I dug into my latest read, Devil in the White City, John prepared a simple breakfast of avocado toast with topped with a poached egg and roasted fingerlings. We spent the better part of the day attached at the hip–grocery shopping for the week, sweeping and Swiffering, and enjoying each others' company after so much time apart lately. After a cheese and charcuterie plate for John and a grilled corn and avocado salad for me, we worked on some repertoire John's been practicing and sketched plans for his upcoming projects. We got gussied up to head to a concert downtown, but after driving around for 30 minutes without finding a parking spot or open garage, we gave up and decided to make our way back home–but only after agreed never to drive to a Saturday night concert again! We made a stop at a nearby Trader Joe's for arancini, which were perfect with a bit of marinara and Frank Underwood's exploits.

We got an early start on Sunday morning, too; John munched on pork buns while I took advantage of the ripe avocados with another slice of avocado toast and a poached egg. My guy headed out early for a mid-morning guitar lesson, giving me plenty of time to dive into some wedding inspiration and refine my early spring editorial calendar. John arrived home just as I was starting my Sunday ballet class, and after a quickie shower, we headed to our Friday night date's matinee recital. There was Beethoven, Rorem and Brahms, and after the wonderful performance, we joined the musicians for a pint at The Plough and Stars. It was just after the dinner hour when we headed home, and we knew the length supper we'd planned wouldn't be done until much too late, so we scrambled a few eggs with parsley and chives, toasted a French loaf and made a simple salad–not what we'd imagined for our Sunday supper, but perfect just the same.

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend? Start a great new book I should try, or see a terrific concert? I can't wait to hear all about it!

A classic cocktail, the Brandy Alexander is rich, boozy and sweet–code for perfect for cozying up with on a Friday night.

3/4 oz heavy cream

Combine brandy, crème de cacao and heavy cream in a cocktail shaker with ice; shake for 10-15 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with freshly grated nutmeg.

I spotted this suite in a wedding a few weeks ago and loved its chic simplicity so much that I just had to track it down; I'll confess to mocking it up a few times, too! Other things I'm loving this week include the finish line on humongous projects, the magic of Uber after a long day and some gorgeous weddings to keep me inspired during a crazy week!

I can practically smell the lavender in the air at this gorgeous Santa Ynez celebration captured by Michelle Warren Photography from Grey Likes Weddings.

I dreamed of making it to Palmetto Bluff during our Southern roadtrip last night–and this whimsical wedding photographed by Kay English via Southern Weddings is precisely why!

Tristan & Meg

Wednesday, February 19, 2014

This classic couple meet riding the New York City Subway, and it didn't take long for their metropolitan romance to get serious. Tristan and Meg always agreed that they'd tie the knot in the Big Apple, and quickly fell in love with the elegant Twenty Four Fifth, formerly the Fifth Avenue Hotel. The 1920's era venue, complete with antiqued mirrors and a sunken dance floor, was perfect for the classic big city celebration Tristan and Meg had in mind.

Meg wore a structured Angel Sanchez gown with a romantic drop waist; gold Valentino peep toes, a pearl necklace and a ruffled bolero from BHLDN completed her modern-meets-classic bridal look. Black tie groomsmen complimented the bridesmaids' black Melissa Sweet for Priscilla of Boston gowns and the understated white tulip bouquets crafted by Glenn Wolski of Urban Design Studio.

After a traditional Catholic ceremony at Greenwich Village's Church of St. Joseph, guests strolled two blocks to Twenty Four Fifth for dinner and dancing. Day-of coordinator Oh So Fabulous! brought Meg's elegant celebration to life, but they were both surprised by the groom's sweet serenade of his new Mrs after dinner! The evening ended with NYC hot dogs and a copy of that day's New York Times–a fitting tribute to these two city dwellers–as the bride changed into a Sue Wong sheath to bid her guests goodnight. And the talented Tara Leigh of Tara Leigh Photography was on hand to capture every classic, joyful moment of the newlywed's city celebration!

A big thank you to Tara Leigh Photography for sharing your wonderful images with me–I just can't resist a classic! Tell me, what's your favorite detail from this Greenwich Village fête?
