The Kitchn spent last week talking cocktails, and one post in particular struck me–What do you order in a bad bar? Most of the drinks I feature shouldn't be attempted in bad bars–neon Budweiser signs or bathrooms that make you doubt the existence of a God are my first clues–so what should you order when you find yourself in a dive?
My go-to "safety drinks" are a Greyhound–1/3 vodka, 2/3 grapefruit juice with plenty of ice, or a Campari and soda, if the bar has a dusty bottle of Campari hiding on the shelf. Even though these are my orders in case of crisis, I actually love these drinks at home, especially in the spring and summer!
Tell me, what do you order in a bad bar?

Wow! Great question!!! I usually order anything in a bottle....but that greyhound sounds lovely!!
ReplyDeleteGin & tonic is my "safety" drink :-) Have a wonderful weekend~
ReplyDeleteWhisky - more bang for my buck! The dive bars around here pride themselves on craft beer, PBR tallboys, and good whisky. I don't complain. But at an event like a wedding or party I go for gin & tonic or vodka & soda with lime - no stain when I inevitably spill on myself while dancing :)
ReplyDeleteI go for the wine. Or a Long Island :)
ReplyDeleteThis greyhound drink you speak of sounds really tasty. When I'm in a bad bar I tend to stick with jack and coke or a vodka tonic.
ReplyDeleteYum...and seriously can you go wrong with a cool, alcoholic drink in a mason jar? I think not!
ReplyDeletewell, now i gotta try these. i usually stick with a rum and diet.
ReplyDeleteI saw that! And was surprised by how many of them couldn't fathom that a bar can screw up a G&T, which they certainly can. Love this idea. Love.
ReplyDeleteAnd, for the record, I can choke down pretty bad wine. If I'm at a bad bar, I probably stick out anyway, so just give me some crappy wine and I'll drink it.
I love Greyhounds! And this is such a pretty way to enjoy one :-)
ReplyDeletea cape cod! always!
ReplyDeletei order usually a beer from a bottle... i don't want anything that has been in contact with humans under certain conditions... haha!
ReplyDeleteHa! I'm a simple water person. My life is so exciting, right? :)

Hahaha! What a great post--your go-to emergency drink. When I'm in a dive I stick with my surroundings and order a beer. Or tequila shots. It's depended on my mood at the time. But I have been known to order a Greyhound too. Those things are pretty tasty and hard to mess up.
ReplyDeleteEven in good bars I usually just get a rum and coke cause I'm so chicken to order something and have the bartender look at me like "you bitch" for making him do some work. Okay, so there were some really bitchy, hipster bartenders where I was going to school.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of a greyhound! It is on my list though now for after the little one arrives!
ReplyDeleteHmmm bad bar drink...probably something in a bottle. Although I despise a tasteless beer so perhaps its time for a new backup!
Excellent question, definitely one that I could mull over but since you mentioned the Greyhound, my absolute fav in spring, summer, winter or fall, I will definitely have to say it is in the running.
ReplyDeleteI think I will pour myself one right now and ponder this question further!!
Love this question, it made me laugh and remember at least one disasterous attempt at getting a martini in a pub. I stick to wine in similar places and leave the cocktails to those who know how to make them now!
ReplyDeleteI just love the trend with serving drinks in mason jars! Adorable!
ReplyDeleteHugs and a happy weekend darling :)
Signe
Not being a drinker at all I get a blue moon served with an orange slice, It is a beer with a taste that is lovely.
ReplyDeleteOh man! I wish I had seen this on Friday. I finished my detox and was ready for Friday drinks... I forgot about them for a while, I don't even know how that's possible. Thanks for sharing, Lena! xoxo
ReplyDeleteThis sounds yummy. I have some grapefruit juice waiting for me at home.
ReplyDeleteUsually a gin & tonic... but a greyhound is my favorite, even at home. :)
ReplyDeleteI do love a greyhound, but usually stick to wine if I am not sure of the bar backs abilities:)
