I'm going to level with you–last week will not be remembered as one of the new year's best weeks for me. Bloggers seem to live these perfect lives full of fresh cut flowers and charming crafts (not to mention cocktails!), but I was driving home on Friday feeling like a complete disaster and vowing to be honest about the weekend. And then, of course, it ended up being exactly what I needed, if not exactly perfect.
I came home early Friday night to an empty house–armed with processed cheese snacks and a red velvet whoopie pie. There was already some bubbly in the fridge, thank goodness. I settled in for an rainy evening of soapy melodramas and trashy reality shows, known for their restorative properties, and found myself feeling better, if not altogether cured by the time John came home. Late night Indian food in bed and someone to laugh with made me remember that no matter how tough a week might be, I'm no less lucky.
John spent Saturday morning running errands while I cleaned house, so we meet up for migas at lunchtime. We spent the afternoon sprawled in bed, computers and library books spread around us, working on some academic pursuits and enjoying the downpour. Early in the evening, we got dressed and headed to Monk's Kettle to celebrate a beer-fiend friend's birthday–but even 5pm wasn't early enough to get a table without a 45 minute wait. We sipped pisco cocktails at Limón while we waited, then hurried to our table. After stopping by another bar or two, we all headed back to the birthday boy's apartment where craft beers were the order of the evening. Many, many hours later, we found ourselves at Mel's, smiling at each other over corned beef hash and diner mashed potatoes.
We slept in on Sunday with the sound of more rain on the window pane, then spent the better part of the late morning and early afternoon curled up in our pjs. Eventually John headed to school to get some practicing done, while I stayed home to blog, spend some time in downward dog and splish splash in the tub. The rainy day also afforded me plenty of time with my latest read, the Paris Wife; is there anything better than curling up with the good book when the weather is dreadful?
What were you up to this weekend? Start a great new book, make snow angels or spend time with friends? I'm dying to hear all about it!

that actually sounds like a perfect weekend to me ;)
ReplyDeleteevery weekend cant be a winner-- h and i were both sick all weekend :( it killed most of our plans but it was nice to spend some quality time with our blankets :) xoxo jillian:: cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteThat weekend sounds lovely! Lena, girl, you know how to make the most of a weekend. After I finally made it home on Saturday David and I are burgers and then headed up to bed with a plan of cuddling that was sidelined by a tummy ache. On Sunday I spend hours reading before I got down to wedding planning and blogging. My favorite moment was picking our first dance song and practicing in the kitchen. xo
ReplyDeleteSorry for your tough week..but your weekend sounds divine! With a very snowy day on Saturday we enjoyed being curled in front of the fire with some hot chocolate and a few sled runs and snow angels! Here's to a brighter week ahead!!
ReplyDeleteHow's Paris wife? I heard good things about it.
ReplyDeleteRomantic!

I'm glad your weekend turned out ok! Cheese makes most things better, in my opinion! :]
ReplyDeleteJust read the Paris Wife and loved it. And I agree...therapy for a bad week can simply be curling up in bed with a good book while the rain is pouring outside!
ReplyDeleteLast week was the week for bloggers...so ironic. Thank goodness it's over. We've had rain, snow, thunder...you name it. So bazaar! Cheers to a new week!
ReplyDeleteWas last week strange for all bloggers? I had a hellishly ugly week. You are so right, Lena. Blogger's embellish everything a little too much. I blog in my pj's, work from home and miss at least 1 bath a week. Sounds as crazy as it is. I'm glad you got some rest. xx
ReplyDeleteOh Lena, I'm so sorry you had a poor week! I did too... It's hard to be honest about when we're feeling bad, but I admire you for it. On the bright side, that umbrella is completely fantastic & I can imagine standing under it all afternoon!
ReplyDeleteYou have a brilliant way of making just about any situation sound perfect! I am so glad your weekend was fabulous after a long week!
ReplyDeleteThat actually sounds really enjoyable! Although I always feel quilty for spending too much time in bed, I don't know why?! Nothing feels better than sprawling out with books & mags in a warm bed.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't make snow angels but we did have snow. It messed up our Friday night plans but I didn't mind staying in :)
glad you had a nice weekend - you deserved that after having such a rough week =)
ReplyDeleteNo, that sounds just perfect. We drove to Palm Springs, driving through up to 90-mile-an-hour winds and a dust storm! Broke a beautiful vase as it flew out the back of the SUV when we arrive {complete with flowers, yes}. But we're here and we're enjoying some much needed R + R but also some serious work: client work, writing, brainstorming.....
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a lovely weekend to make up for your yucky week. I hope this week is much better for you!!!
ReplyDeleteis there any way you could please summarize my weekends for me, too? i love your eloquent wording, it takes me to exactly where you were, a happy state of weekend relaxation :)
ReplyDeleteI want to please snuggle up with you and read books in our pjs together. Oh and let's be roomies please too! :) Heart you xo
ReplyDeleteUmm.... that sounds like pretty much the best weekend ever. Food, food, and more food! I love processed cheese. Let's not talk about it right here in this lovely space though.
ReplyDeleteAnd you have a beer friend? Sometimes I wonder if we have the same friends.
I had a bad weekend the one before, so I was glad this one was a reprieve. Glad yours was just what you needed.
ReplyDeleterainy weekends are the best for relaxation time. Your weekend sounds pretty great to me. Hope this week is a stellar one for you.
ReplyDeleteyour weekend descriptions are always so sweet. it was rainy here almost all weekend too. we both worked on saturday, saw some new friends saturday night and watched football on sunday while eating amazing spaghetti and meatballs (thanks to my John).
ReplyDeleteThe Paris Wife huh? Sounds like a great winter read. Googling now. ;)
ReplyDeleteI knew we were meant to be! Migas are my favorite. That weekend sounds like a perfect way to decompress after a long week! Hope this week is great.
ReplyDeleteNever underestimate the power of cheese snacks and reality TV :-)
ReplyDeletei'm going to level with you, too: i spent a good portion of friday night and saturday bawling my head off because i missed my niece's first singing recital.
ReplyDeleteepic fail of an aunt.
xo,

Perhaps the weekend wasn't perfect, but it sounds like your were certainly proactive! My sister visited me and stocked my fridge with lots of yummy treats! You can get her recipes at therescuebaker.blogspot.com if you're interested. Hope you have a great week. xo style, she wrote
ReplyDeleteprocessed cheese snacks and red velvet whoopie pie? woman, come over!
ReplyDeleteThis picture is too precious! I love rainy day wedding pictures so much that I don't think I would mind too much if it rained on my wedding day someday :) I'm glad your weekend turned out wonderfully after all! xoxox
ReplyDeleteYou had a splendid week after all. What is the matter with the weather. It hasn't stopped raining here on and off. I just purchased that book on my Nook and cannot wait to devour it...and in the tub no less! Happy week my friend! XO
ReplyDeletebeautiful photo! i love her dress!
ReplyDeleteProof that sometimes you need a Friday night at home, snuggling on the couch, watching crap movies and eating comfort food. And a wonderful partner to snuggle with at the end of the night. :) Glad your weekend looked up. Mine wasn't the greatest but I'm so glad the past two weeks are finally done! Yay for February!
ReplyDeleteAh well, that still sounds better than my weekend. What sort of trashy shows are we talkin? ;)
ReplyDeleteI did spend a fair amount of time reading in my past few power outage days. My Life in France...which was awful because I couldn't cook anything Julia Child was writing about!
Aww I'm sorry you had a hard week -- but your weekend sounds like just what the doctor ordered!
ReplyDeleteActually that sounds like a smashing weekend :-)
ReplyDeleteI spent mine at a swanky birthday party, a bridesmaid shopping day, an engagement party, and the loveliest girly day indulging in high tea.
I have actually just ordered myself a copy of that book. Can't wait to read it!
