Is there anything more magical than a wedding at a gorgeous family estate to the man you love? The answer, in this case, is actually yes–and it's all because of the ponies.

The bride and groom were married at the bride's family home in River Oaks, Texas. The home was built my her grandparents in the 1950s, and after countless birthday parties and family get togethers, it was also the site of this beautiful celebration.

Carolyn wore a ivory silk gown by Palazzo of Chicago, paired with a cathedral length veil trimmed in Chantilly lace by Toni Federici, while bridesmaids wore draped mint green gowns. Christopher and his groomsmen look dapper in classic black tie, and as the dancing started, the bride changed into a tea length Vineyard gown. The couple departed in a shower of white rose petals and sparklers, beautifully captured by Brooke Schwab.

Singin' in the Rain

I'm going to level with you–last week will not be remembered as one of the new year's best weeks for me. Bloggers seem to live these perfect lives full of fresh cut flowers and charming crafts (not to mention cocktails!), but I was driving home on Friday feeling like a complete disaster and vowing to be honest about the weekend. And then, of course, it ended up being exactly what I needed, if not exactly perfect.

I came home early Friday night to an empty house–armed with processed cheese snacks and a red velvet whoopie pie. There was already some bubbly in the fridge, thank goodness. I settled in for an rainy evening of soapy melodramas and trashy reality shows, known for their restorative properties, and found myself feeling better, if not altogether cured by the time John came home. Late night Indian food in bed and someone to laugh with made me remember that no matter how tough a week might be, I'm no less lucky.

John spent Saturday morning running errands while I cleaned house, so we meet up for migas at lunchtime. We spent the afternoon sprawled in bed, computers and library books spread around us, working on some academic pursuits and enjoying the downpour. Early in the evening, we got dressed and headed to Monk's Kettle to celebrate a beer-fiend friend's birthday–but even 5pm wasn't early enough to get a table without a 45 minute wait. We sipped pisco cocktails at Limón while we waited, then hurried to our table. After stopping by another bar or two, we all headed back to the birthday boy's apartment where craft beers were the order of the evening. Many, many hours later, we found ourselves at Mel's, smiling at each other over corned beef hash and diner mashed potatoes.

We slept in on Sunday with the sound of more rain on the window pane, then spent the better part of the late morning and early afternoon curled up in our pjs. Eventually John headed to school to get some practicing done, while I stayed home to blog, spend some time in downward dog and splish splash in the tub. The rainy day also afforded me plenty of time with my latest read, the Paris Wife; is there anything better than curling up with the good book when the weather is dreadful?

Widow's Kiss

So the title might need to be reworked to make it a truly perfect wedding libation, but the Widow's Kiss is an ideal cocktail in the weather so many of you are enjoying. Complex and ever so spiced, this drink simply demands a crackling fireplace or a snowy view to enjoy it by!

Widow's Kiss

1 1/2 oz Calvados or apple brandy

1/2 oz yellow or green chartreuse

1/2 oz Bénédictine

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker; shake with ice for 5-10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Notes: This cocktail first appeared in George Kappeler’s Modern American Drinks, 1895; it's hard to argue with pedigree like that, but feel free to experiment with the proportions here. John and I like a half ounce each of green chartreuse and Bénédictine, but there's no reason to follow this recipe exactly. Cheers!

When a couple chooses "magical, whimsical and happy" as the most important elements of their wedding, you can be sure their celebration will be just that. It's hard to deny the magical effect of a cupcake truck, after all!

Graceann picked her Lucky Luxe handkerchief invitations after scouring stationers for something that would set the tone of their celebration; the reply card suggested arriving "with bells on"! In addition to custom invitations, the couple created a deeply personal wedding ceremony, including three private minutes to exchange their most personal vow (isn't that an amazing idea?).

The bride wore a classic lace gown by La Sposa paired with pearls and a lace-trimmed veil, while bridesmaids wore floor-length Amsale gowns in blush pink. Graceann's peony, hydrangea, dusty miller, and astilbe bouquet was wrapped in lace from her mother's veil and pinned with a vintage cameo from her father–a perfect something borrowed. Posey Floral also designed the floral strewn altar and the stunning table arrangements. Tucked in vintage milk pitchers, mason jars, mercury glass and lanterns, the flowers were nothing short of spectacular.

After a ceremony on the lawn of Laguna Gloria, guests enjoyed a family style meal underneath a large oak tree. After cupcakes from Hey Cupcake!, the newlyweds enjoyed a send off prepared by their wedding coordinators, 36th St Events–bells! And on hand to capture that moment and each one before were the fabulous husband and wife team, the Nichols!

My mother blames my fascination with weddings on early exposure; she made gowns for several close family friends when I was just a toddler, and my very first wedding included a Swiss dot wedding dress and sneaking buttercream frosting with my co-flower girl and very best friend. This frothy, lace-y, ever-so-slightly-sparkly gown spoke to the stuff little girl dreams are made of–how about you?

Last week was deliriously busy, but for the very best reasons, and John and I decided to celebrate them on Friday night with Indian food and Maharaja Pilsners (best beer for spicy Indian food). We tumbled home, excited for the prospect of three whole days to ourselves!

We spent Saturday morning curled up next to each other, typing away on our respective computers. John authored a comprehensive tome on beer brewing for his baby brother, who got a brew kit from us for Christmas, while I soaked up inspiration, fell in love with a half dozen invitation suites and watched sh*t all kinds of people say. My favorites? Brides, yogis and opera singers. We grabbed a table outside for brunch at Sea Breeze Café, then I made my way to Paper Source for Valentine's Day supplies. Along the way, I found the world's best coupe glasses at Pottery Barn–highly recommended for anyone hunting for vintage-inspired cocktail glasses. I glued and doodled to my heart's content with a Kir Royale by my side to increase creativity, then settled in with my sweetheart for dinner and Due Date, which only fueled my passion for a Frenchie.

We decided to throw an impromptu cocktail party Sunday night, so we spent the morning cleaning, juicing and reading; has anyone else gotten into A Practical Wedding yet? On the menu were rum based drinks (Blue Hawaiis and piña coladas poured into hollowed-out pineapples, frozen daiquiris no. 1 and no. 3, just like Hemingway ordered them, and John's favorite tiki cocktail, the 20-70 Swizzle) and frozen hors d'oeuvres. Since we San Franciscans don't have any snow to enjoy, we figured we'd make the best of what we've got!

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend? And how many of you are enjoying today off? I've sworn to make the most of it, but I haven't decided just how to spent it yet!

Blue Hawaii

One of my favorite gifts this Christmas in a season of incredibly generous gift-giving was a Waring Pro blender from my parents; built like a tank, it has an on-off switch and a chrome finish that would make classic car enthusiasts proud. But best of all, it makes finely-blended cocktails John and I hadn't dreamed of having at home a reality, like the Blue Hawaii. Blended cocktails get a bad rap and are usually confined to vacation resorts, but plenty of distinguished drinkers lauded the virtues of a frothy frappé, so whip up one this weekend without shame!

Blue Hawaii

1 1/4 oz light rum
1 1/4 oz pineapple juice
1 oz blue Curacao
1 oz lemon juice

small cube of fresh pineapple

Blend all ingredients with crushed ice. Garnish with a cherry and a small wedge of fresh pineapple.

Notes: Invented in 1957 by Harry K. Yee of the Hawaiian Village Hotel in Waikiki, the Blue Hawaii was actually created at the behest of Bols, to boost sagging sales of blue curacao. Which isn't to say it isn't delicious–this vacation-in-a-glass charmed even John, who usually orders his whiskey neat! Cheers, darlings!

Doesn't that look like heaven? Big open space, the top down and no one but you and your special someone to soak it all up?

Our weekend was quiet, and thank goodness for that–I don't know about you, but I needed some time to recover from the madness of the holidays! I caught a sniffle that I had no interest in allowing to become a full-blown cold, so we canceled our plans for a small Friday night cocktail party and got into our pjs before 7pm (glamorous, right?). We ordered spicy Indian food to help clear my head and settled in for a double feature: Back to the Future Parts I & II; No. 2 is my personal favorite, but we fell asleep less than half way through.

We spent Saturday catching up: on practice, on blogging, on trashy TV, the works. It felt so good to do nothing at all after a busy week back. We ended up giggling that night over homemade pizzas and jam jars full of our favorite rosé, and were sound asleep long before the holiday light displays in our neighborhood were switched off. After a big Sunday brunch (damn that John, thwarting my plans to go out with beautiful breakfasts in bed!), we headed to San Francisco Brewcraft, John's personal heaven, where he finally befriended the owner and left with all the mixings for an oatmeal stout. That afternoon, we threw an impromptu beer brewing soirée, because beer's always more fun to make together and men, it seems, can't resist playing with their new toys. After tacos at Underdogs and bathing with the brewing equipment (John, not me), it was time to call it a night!

Cranberry Bellini

I realized that John and I have gotten so good at cooking our weekend brunches that we've stopped frequenting our favorite cafés altogether! One thing I miss about those breakfasts out (besides leaving our dishes on the table, of course) are the brunch cocktails; I'm hard pressed to open up a bottle of bubbly so early in the day at home! This bellini combines two of my very favorite flavors: pear and cranberry!

Cranberry Bellini

1 cup of pear nectar
1 cup of cranberry juice
1 bottle of sparkling wine

Combine the pear nectar and cranberry juice in a pitcher or large measuring cup; pour 1/4 cup into each flute. Top with sparkling wine.

Notes: Brunch cocktails are usually simple, something that's most appreciated if you're mixing them up while your morning coffee is still brewing. Choose whatever bubbly you have on hand or leftover from last night, as long as you've got a good Champagne stopper!

Holiday in Review

With yesterday's big reveal and all my inspiration for the new look, I thought it would be best to give the wrap up of our holiday trip its own post!

We started our holiday season in Providence, where my parents now live. A tour of their favorite spots included a feast at India Restaurant, cheese at Farmstead, baked goods at Seven Stars and ice skating at Kennedy Plaza, a first for John just like the snow on Christmas morning! We also peeked at a few possible wedding locations, talked guest lists and engagement rings, and John got to meet all of my immediate extended family–aunts, uncles, cousins! When we weren't cooking or eating, which was probably only a few collective hours during our 5 day stay, we were walking off those indulgent meals with long walks around Providence's east side. And of course, there were plenty of travel mishaps; I thought drop kicking the handle of my carry on would fix the jam, our Providence to Chicago flight (which would ultimately get us to Dallas) was canceled, which was a charming 5:30am surprise when we came upon the abandoned gate, and after being delayed in Charlotte at 11pm that same night, I thought, "Next year, we're all just going to Mexico."

But we finally made it to Dallas, where John and I spent Thursday reading and relaxing to our heart's content, only leaving the house to indulge in frozen margaritas and fajitas at Esparza's. Friday's Armed Forces Bowl pitted Tulsa, where my soon-to-be baby brother-in-law (what a mouthful!) plays, against BYU, but a Cougars touchdown in the last minute of game play was a disappointment after a spectacular season. We chased away our sorrows with seemingly endless sushi and sake bombs–I piloted the Suburban home, so I only partook in half the fun.

After John's painful morning recovery, we spent most of the day catching up with his oldest friends. New Year's Eve lessons learned: eat a late-afternoon lunch if you've made 10pm dinner reservations (ours were at Grace, a delicious Fort Worth restaurant whose sweet potato soup with pork belly dumplings I'm still dreaming about), dress your sweetheart in a three-piece suit if you want the best table in the room, and don't forget your disco nap! New Year's Day was deliciously lazy, minus some furious coding on my part; I don't know if we've ever watched so many episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in a single sitting. And though we had high hopes for our Dallas-San Francisco flight, it wasn't without its traveling travails. We made it home in time for dinner, and I've never been happier to be back in the Bay.

Now that you're filled in on what I've been up to, I want to know what you were doing this past week! How many of you got engaged this holiday, or know someone who did? My newfeed was positively sparkling; my dear friend Cara, my favorite pen pal (and fabulous blogger) Jen and my sweet friend Maria from music school all found proposals under the tree!

I'm bursting with excitement to finally share what I've been working on for months: A Crimson Kiss! I decided it was time for a bit of rebranding ages ago, but it wasn't until I started to seriously think about my own wedding that I found a direction and perspective that was truly my own.

Weddings are the fascinating intersection of fashion, design trends, religious traditions and family heritage that have captured so many of us. Planning the happiest day of your life is no small undertaking, and as wedding bloggers, we share images or ideas that inspire and excite us, hoping that brides will find details they can't wait to include on their big day. I wanted to speak to brides like me who adore the classics, who pour over their grandmothers' wedding albums and F. Scott Fitzgerald novels. Girls who swoon over mint condition china patterns at Goodwill and coupe glass towers filled with bubbly. A Crimson Kiss is inspired by the weddings and debutante balls of the 40s, 50s and early 60s, by Normal Rockwell illustrations, and by brides who know there's nothing more stylish than a classic red lip.

I know the new look and destination is a big change; I'm still in shock myself every time I refresh the page. Bloggers make up the most incredibly supportive community, and I'm always so delighted when you take time to enjoy a wedding, scope out a pair of shoes or shake up a cocktail. The punches and peep toes won't be going anywhere, I promise, and I hope you all love the changes as much as I do!

Roasted Orange Negroni Sbagliato

The name might be a mouthful, but so's this cocktail–and a delicious one at that! The orange flavors remind me of the clementines my parents would slip into our Christmas stockings, and any sparkling cocktail gets my approval this time of year!

Roasted Orange Negroni Sbagliato

1 orange wedge
1 oz. Carpano Antica
1 1/4 oz. Campari
1 1/4 oz. lambrusco bianco

Lightly char the orange wedge over a gas burner or on a grill. Let cool.

In a mixing glass, muddle roasted orange with vermouth. Add Campari and ice, then stir. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass, top with sparkling wine.

Notes: This cocktail calls for some fairly specific ingredients, but there simply is no substitute for Campari (or Carpano Antica, for that matter). The one place you do have some wiggle room is with the lambrusco bianco, a tough to find bubbly that will be as delicious in this cocktail as prossecco, it's slightly lighter cousin.

A gorgeous three-quarter sleeve gown, a stunning farm setting and this DIY wedding produced by two performers absolutely stole my heart. This pair met on the set of a TV show, got engaged in a theater and wanted their wedding to be their biggest production yet, full of heartfelt details and thoughtful touches.

Sarah and Justin decided on a "Snazzy Picnic" theme once they found their dream venue, the Collingwood Children's Farm. Guests mingled with the baby animals and sipped tea Sarah and Justin, along with a graphic designer friend branded, to stay warm in the cooler temperatures. The newlyweds spent months collecting 150 tea sets; guests collected the cup with their name on it during the pre-ceremony tea time, then found the matching plate at their seats later in the evening.

Sarah's gorgeous gown was modeled after a 2009 Giambattista Valli confection, to the delight of her seamstress, Alice of Alice Haute Couture. The ivory gown was perfectly complimented by red Kate Spade peep toe mary janes, a blusher veil from portobello and BHLDN gloves. Bridesmaids were 50s chic in navy "Raileen" dresses from Stop Staring, which matched the handmade flower girls' dresses and ruffled cardigans perfectly, and everyone carried posies of baby's breath, designed by Melanie Stapleton of Cecilia Fox. Justin was dapper in dark denim, a J.Crew vest, colorful bow tie and a Eugenia Kim hat, while groomsmen donned navy plaid shirts from French Connection, Charles Tyrwhitt vests and Carhartt jeans.

After tea and the outdoor ceremony, officiated by Melbourne radio personality Jon von Goes, guests headed to the Regal Ballroom in a 1938 Diamond T Bus for an evening of surprises, including a performance by the Golden Toppers, a 60+ all-women tap dance troupe, and a flashmob wedding dance that half the guests were in on. Each of the 15 tables had their own cake, baked by friends and family, and everyone dug into the ice cream sundae bar styled by the wedding's designers, Georgie Kay and Erin Lilja of Simply Georgeous Events. It was the perfect ending to an impossibly sweet celebration.

I am positively bursting with excitement this week; the upcoming holidays give me an excuse to wear my preppiest plaids, hand out carefully chosen gifts and celebrate our engagement with far flung family and friends, but it's 2012 I can't stop thinking about!

The New Year will not only bring kisses and Champagne, but a whole new look (and name!) to this carefully curated blog. You'll be getting a peek this week at images that influenced the new look, and come January 2, there'll be a big reveal! I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed that you'll be as crazy about it as I am!

After last weekend's escapades and a spectacular but busy week at the office, I was ready for some quiet time, and boy was the weekend exactly what I'd hoped for. John welcomed me home with a cocktail (a daiquiri made with Barbancourt White) on Friday night, and we giggled over homemade pizza and (yes, I'm really admitting to this) Die Hard 2: Die Harder. I guess nothing says Christmas like holiday-themed terrorist attacks, right? You can imagine my disappointment when I learned that Die Hard 3 involved no twinkling lights, faux snow or Santa hats.

We were up early on Saturday morning (why is that so much harder to do on Thursday?) and cooked a lovely breakfast side by side at the stove. After errands that wrapped up our Christmas shopping and holiday prep, we headed back home to knock out work that's been piling up; really, does anything feel better than checking stuff off your to-do list, or cleaning up your image folders? Avocados are finally edible again, so we celebrated our last weekend in the Golden State with tacos, guacamole and limeade.

John brought me breakfast in bed on Sunday, and we discovered that our favorite Sconehenge scones are even more delicious warmed in the oven. Morning sun salutations, a cherry red pedicure, packing for our holiday travel and finishing my latest read, Mad Men and Philosophy, kept me busy while John was at school, desperate to log hours in the practice room before we fly out Thursday evening. A Sunday evening shepherd's pie (a tasty way to clean out the fridge) paired perfectly with Elf, and we felt ready to take on this week!

'Tis the season for holiday tipples, and I've been thinking about what the inaugural punch for my new milkglass beauty should be (John, I'm sorry for peeking!). This pretty pink punch is full of my favorite thing–bubbles–but now I need to know is how big that new bowl is!

Champagne-Pomegranate Punch

2 750-ml bottles chilled brut Champagne
1 1/2 cups white rum
1 1/4 cups pomegranate juice
1 large lemon, thinly slice
pomegranate seeds
fresh mint leaves
simple syrup
ice block

Combine Champagne, rum and pomegranate juice in punch bowl. Add enough syrup to sweeten to taste; mix in lemon slices, pomegranate seeds and mint leaves. Add ice block to bowl.

Notes: While this punch calls for Champagne, it's smart to choose a less expensive bottle of bubbly–a Cava or blanc de blanc would be equally delicious. If you're whipping this up in advance, add your ice block as the first guests arrive to keep your punch sparkling!

Mrs Armour has been waxing poetic about a case of Southern wanderlust lately, and when she shared a dreamy Charleston home, I knew I was bound to catch the bug, too! This wedding, held in a Charleston town home, is the perfect Southern celebration!

The bride wore a gown by Ulla Maija and a veil by Reem Acra, and bridesmaids wore black strapless and ivory one-shoulder gowns by Rachel Pally. They carried bouquets of green hydrangeas and cream roses, and Lindsay carried a full bouquet of her favorite flower, orchids, nestled in green hydrangeas. David wore a crisp black suit, while his groomsmen donned baby blue Banana Republic sweaters and black ties.

Lindsay and David were married at St Luke's Chapel and celebrated their nuptials at the Wickliffe House, whose white columns and wide front porch were made for sipping sweet tea. Tables were set with mercury glass vases and votives, and lush arrangements of roses, hydrangeas, peonies, dusty miller and sweet peas in pinks, creams, greens and yellows by Tiger Lily Weddings were a nod to the couple's Easter weekend wedding date.

Dinner, served on the porch, was a low country affair: barbecue biscuits, shrimp and grits, and a mashed potato bar. Dancing on the lawn was encouraged, and lounge areas beneath the lanterns were the perfect place for guests to catch their breath between Stephen Jenkins' sets. After a classic buttercream cake by Ashley Bakery, the newlyweds made a sparkling exit; Joey and Jessica, the dynamic duo behind Veil and Bow captured their departure, and each moment of their gorgeous celebration!

Have you ever seen a sweeter bouquet? Roses, stephanotis and hydrangeas tied up in scalloped ribbon and topped with a gold locket–I simply can't resist!

This weekend was, in a word, festive. John finished the semester on Friday, so we celebrated with a late dinner at our favorite Indian restaurant, then came home to watch one of his favorite "holiday" movies, Die Hard. We made a speedy trip to Palo Alto to run some errands on Saturday morning, then indulged in a Champagne and caviar tasting at the Wine Club with friends. We came home to whip up a batch of fleur de sel caramels (that ended up closer to toffee than caramel, and sadly, in the trash) and enjoy a delicious late lunch before heading back out for cocktails and Christmas carols.

Many, many hours (and for John, drinks) later, we headed home–I won't even tell you what time you what time we got to bed, but we missed Sunday morning altogether! After the gorgeous brunch John cooked, I picked up a few last gifts, caught up on work and my favorite blogs and whipped up a fresh batch of caramels; it was a laid back Sunday, the perfect antidote to Saturday's overindulgence!

Tom and Jerry

Eggnog is a holiday staple, but this year I thought I'd introduce you to its warmed up cousin, the Tom and Jerry. The addition of brandy to this classic made it incredibly popular in the early 1800's, and it'll be a hit at your house, too!

Tom and Jerry

2 eggs, separated
1/8 tsp cream of tarter
1 1/2 cups plus 2 tsp dark rum
2/3 cup superfine sugar
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp ground allspice
1/8 tsp ground clove
4 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups brandy
freshly grated nutmeg

Whisk egg whites and cream of tartar to stiff peaks in a large bowl.  In another bowl, whisk yolks, 2 tsp rum, sugar, cinnamon, allspice and cloves until thick. Fold egg whites into yolk mixture in 2 batches. Cover bowl with plastic wrap; chill batter. 

To serve, warm milk in a 2-qt. saucepan over medium low heat. Put 1 heaping tbsp batter into a mug; stir in 1–2 tbsp each of cognac and rum. Fill mug with 6 tbsp milk; stir until frothy and garnish with nutmeg.

Notes: This is a fairly fussy recipe, but it's well worth the effort. Use whatever rum and brandy you have on hand, since the spices and milk will make even inexpensive liquor tasty. Cheers!

Dorothy and John

A wedding in a winter wonderland? Maybe I've forgotten about how cold it can be, but I'm absolutely bewitched by this snow-covered celebration!

Dorothy and John were married at the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole, WY; in an nod to the striking winter landscape, their invitation suite by Carrot & Stick Press featured a single aspen branch. The bride wore an architectural Angel Sanchez gown paired with an Anya Hindmarch rabbit fur coat and silver Hunter wellies, while her maid of honor and flower girls wore dresses in shades of slate. Flower Hardware's Cecelia Heffernan composed bouquets of white and green ranunculus, dusty miller, silver berzilia, and ornithogalum, then filled low vases with garden roses, white tulips and dahlias. After an intimate ceremony, guests warmed up at dinner and delighted in a dessert buffet featuring berry and lemon tarts and a buttercream wedding cake.

Is there anything better than a handsome man in a well-fitted suited? This bit of eye candy seemed like the perfect way to kick off this week–the month between Thanksgiving and winter holidays seem equally endless and exciting, don't they?

On Friday night, I put on some red lipstick (Tarte's matte lip stain in Fiery is my new favorite) and John and I headed to a little Thai restaurant in our neighborhood for an impromptu Friday night date. After tom kha soup, pad gra prow and a spicy Massaman curry, we indulged in coconut gelato as delicious as it is precious; it was carried from Bent Spoon, my favorite ice cream shop in Princeton, all the way to me in San Francisco, and I'm trying to make it last!

Saturday morning was a most unusual role reversal–John stayed curled up in bed until early afternoon while I wrapped presents and enjoyed (for the second or third time since Friday afternoon!) Ever Ours' phenomenal holiday playlist. My sweetheart finally dragged himself out from under the covers for tacos and Blue Bottle coffee at Underdogs, and we enjoyed the 20 block walk in San Francisco's outrageously warm December weather. That evening, I found my new "winter" rosé, a rosato from Rosa d'Oro, that paired perfectly with John's penne arrabiata.

Things were back to usual on Sunday morning when John woke up early and surprised me with breakfast in bed. He headed to school to practice, while I did a whirlwind clean, enjoyed my favorite blogs (and the December issue of Matchbook!) with a cup of tea, practiced my high notes, and squeezed in some yoga. Confession? I love having the house to myself for the afternoon!

Pear Smash

Earlier this week, I came across some pears that reminded me of those ripe beauties that arrive at Christmastime in those Harry & David boxes, and I knew they'd be delicious in a cocktail. When I came across this ginger-infused libation on Cocktail Remedy, I knew my pears had found their boozy home!

Pear Smash

1/2 pear, wedged and cored
1/2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
1 1/2 oz whiskey
1/2 oz ginger liqueur or syrup
ginger ale

Muddle pear and lime juice until pear is pulverized. Add whiskey and ginger liqueur, shake vigorously with ice for 5-10 seconds. Strain into a highball glass over ice, top with ginger ale.

Notes: Feel free to use whatever whiskey you have on hand for this cocktail, or even try a bit of bourbon. Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur is perfectly suited to this drink, but you can also make a ginger syrup if you can't find a bottle at your nearby package store. Cheers!

Tessa and Adam

I've got a soft spot for small budget weddings and big DIY undertakings; Tessa and Adam's celebration is the perfect combination of spending savvy and sweet style, don't you agree?

The bride designed her gown, then her mother, a talented seamstress, whipped it up for her, along with the darling flower girls' dresses. Bridesmaids and groomsmen were asked to wear light colors, while Adam wore a seersucker suit from J.Crew with a plaid vintage tie and tie clip. Tessa made felt flower corsages and boutonnieres for the bridal party and ribbon wands for the flower girls, but did count on a florist to build her lovely bouquet, filled with garden roses and billy balls.

After the ceremony, the couple played lawn games like croquet and bocce ball with their guests, and encouraged everyone into canoes and paddle boats in the pond behind the barn. They also rented a giant parachute for the big day, and not surprisingly, being tossed up in the air by their friends was a highlight for the bride and groom.

Tessa's bunting flags decorated the barn, and the couple served hot dogs from J Dawgs. Family and friends baked the cupcakes, pies, bundt cakes and donuts that filled the dessert table, and guests washed down their sweets with milk from old-fashioned milk bottles. On hand to capture each sweet moment was the talented Jessica Peterson, Tessa's former roommate; thank you, Jessica, for sharing these wonderful photos with us!

I wish I could tell you how divine our break was, but the truth is that I spent most of it lying in bed with tissues shoved up my nose. You should have seen the look on John's face when he said, "You look like you!"; it gave new meaning to the word "relief".

Since I don't have a single thing to report except Avoid Getting the Flu, I want to hear what you were up to this weekend–where you went, what you ate, gifts you bought this weekend–let me live vicariously through your holidays, darlings!

Charity and Yoni

I met Charity in a studio class at Peabody; she was outrageous, funny, had the most unforgettable voice I'd ever heard. She wore bejeweled bracelets on both wrists that read "Charity" and "Sunshine", her middle name. And, as it turned out, she had Pulmonary Hypertension.

She met Yoni, her future husband, volunteering on a political campaign, and while their romance blossomed slowly, he was there after the deaths of her grandfather and father, there after she received a double lung transplant, and there after a month long coma and the road from recovery to the operatic stage.

Her TEDMED talk is amazing, and goes much further into her incredible story.

Charity and Yoni were engaged this May, and sandwiched their wedding between additional surgeries, her Lincoln Center debut, hospital visits and countless other performances, but as Charity explained, "We wanted to get married so we did." It was a family effort to pull together their October wedding; sisters Mercina and Glorianna (affectionately referred to as Four and Five on the blog Charity shares with her four sisters) arranged the one hundred and fifty sunflowers they'd ordered with wildflower picked in the freezing rain, while her uncle Justin Dick of Hunter Creek Design created their lovely chuppah. Charity asked everyone to dress in her color palette, white, tan, gray and yellow, which brought color to the morning wedding. They had a spectacular brunch at the Columns Bed & Breakfast starring baked goods Charity is still raving about, and her family, uncle Joshua Gat, sisters Liberty and Glorianna Tillemann-Dick and Margot Dick captured this joyful celebration that Charity was generous enough to share with me.

Charity and Yoni's wedding may not be featured in the pages of Martha Stewart Weddings or pinned to death, but that's not what made me cry the first time I saw these photos, or as I write this now–it's these two incredible people, promising through very real obstacles to love, support and be thankful for one another, and the joy that shines in the faces of this incredible family.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you, and may we find things to be thankful for each and every day.

Apple Cobbler

Since I won't be posting on Friday (don't worry, I have a very special wedding to share tomorrow), I thought we'd kick off the long weekend with a perfect Thanksgiving aperitif! Pick up a bottle of bourbon to spice up your pecan pie, then whip up one of these to enjoy while you're finishing last-minute preparations tonight!

Apple-Bourbon Cobbler

2 oz apple cider

2 oz ginger ale

1 oz bourbon

Combine apple cider and bourbon; shake well. Strain over crushed ice, top with ginger ale. Garnish with an apple slice.

Notes: The cobbler is the rare historical cocktail class that is categorized more by the glass and ice than by the ingredients–in this case, a "long drink" served over crushed ice and garnished with fruit. This simple cocktail is served well by the freshest apple cider you can find and whatever bourbon you have on hand. Cheers, and Happy Thanksgiving!

Do ya'll have a signature scent? After several years perfume free, I've been reunited with my favorite eau parfumee, Bvlgari's Au Thé Vert, and the art of spraying it on each morning feels so fancy and feminine! Did you wear your every day scent for the big day, or choose something singular when you said "I do"?

This weekend was, in a word, wonderful. Mike, John's younger brother, played his first college game as a starter; there's really nothing like watching #39 on CBS Sports as he blocks for touchdowns, runs 15 yards for a easy first down and goes barreling down the field. I was hoarse for screaming on Saturday afternoon, and I'm sure the neighbors considered calling the police! After trips to Michaels and BevMo for Thanksgiving supplies, we spent the evening curled up in bed with West Wing, enjoying the sound of the rain on the window panes that lasted well into Sunday morning.

John brought me breakfast in bed, but we soon set off on our respective missions–John to practice at school, me to comb the local restaurant supply shops for little pie tins and votives. I hurried back home to get out of the rain and curl up with some overdue reading of both the blog and book variety, then whipped up chicken pot pies for dinner–talk about heaven!

Fair warning: this collection might be the most pricey of the bunch. Of course, any gift you give your baby brother, you can give to your sweetheart, but these are the kinds of gifts that might not work vice versa. I was inspired by gifts I've given to John when I curated this particular collection, so all these presents are man-approved!

For the music lover, there's nothing better than cool stereo equipment. It can be an antique record player, a box set of his favorite band's albums or these exceptionally awesome cigar boxes, converted into speakers! Mad Men chic stereos by Tivoli also get my endorsement for their sleek styling and iPod ready features.

Maybe it's thanks to his Southern upbringing, but John is nearly never without a handkerchief. Why not make a pair of Irish linen beauties even more special with his monogram? And it's not just his hanky that earns a monogram; over the years, John has picked up monogrammed cufflinks, dress shirts, stationary (a favorite gift) and a key ring he promptly lost (but whose replacement, a mangled paperclip, he held onto for years). Since there's a limit to the jewelry your guy will wear (to each his own) and John doesn't wear any at all, I love luxurious accessories he can use every day.

Unless he's a world travel, a dopp kit might not get get daily use but it's a gorgeous gift nevertheless. I'm thoroughly devoted to Lotuff & Clegg, a New England leather company that makes classic, covetable bags that will also be terrific heirlooms. I adore buying gifts for John that he could pass onto future generations, but have plenty of practical use right now. Since he wears a full beard, the straight razor kit I got him a few years ago might not get that much mileage, but he takes care to sharpen and shave using his old fashioned blade whenever we're celebrating something special. It doesn't have to be a straight razor either; The Art of Shaving makes great kits designed to work with easy-to-find blades like Gillette.

Have you already bought your guy his gift? Since John and I are celebrating in two places this year, he's got presents waiting in Providence and Dallas, not to mention gifts hidden in every closet!

I don't know about you, but I've always found shopping for my parents to be the toughest assignment. For years growing up, it doesn't even occur to you to buy them presents, and when you finally decide to start, it's impossible to catch up with their level of generosity, or so it seems. These gift ideas are perfect for Mom and Dad, but also grandparents, newlyweds, aunts and uncles.

My mother is an amazing cook, but most of her kitchen gadgets are circa their 1978 wedding. Why not replace that beat up toaster or ancient coffee grinder, and throw in a few fresh dish towels to match? I love this remote meat thermometer–no one will burn their thumb trying to pry our Soviet Era gauge out of the roast this year!

My parents are wine aficionados, so the liquor cabinet they've built is rarely put to use. That's not to say they don't go mad for the cocktails John whips up whenever he comes to visit, so a book of classic cocktail recipes is a gift that will put their booze to good use. In general, I love books as gifts–and even better if it's a book you've read and loved. My dad's been reading through my high school assignments (I always bought my own copies so I could make notes in the margins) and I think reading what I had to say is half the fun!

A new throw (or decorative pillows) spruce up that couch they've had for as long as you can remember, but makes a great gift for grandparents or couple friends, too. My favorite gift tip for newlyweds? Buy a few extra things off their registry (towels are my favorite, but a few extra place settings are always a good idea, too!)–and give them to them after the wedding, once all those fresh white towels have dulled.

Apple products always make great gifts, but what makes this idea special is personalization. When I bought a new Macbook, I gave the iPod Touch it came with to my mom, filled to the brim with my favorite operas. It would have taken her ages to figure out how to add songs (am I the only one with technologically hesitant parents?), and their musical library is on CD, cassette tapes and vinyl, not digital. Once she figured out how to push play, she had a college level Opera Education course waiting for her! Of course, it doesn't have to be opera; fill your parents' with your favorite tunes, and include some of their favorites, too!

A framed photo is a traditional gift, but that doesn't mean they won't love it. Sure, they can check out your Facebook account for recent photos, but frame those engagement shots or wedding portraits (or even a great candid), and send Mom and Dad a copy in a lovely frame. A copy of my current headshot sits on our kitchen counter; even when I'm far away, I can still join them for dinner!

Charlie is a music fiend; these (Christmas-themed!) vintage vinyl coasters pay homage to his favorite bands and protect the furniture in his new Boston pad. Another great gift for his new apartment? Unlike your girlfriend or your little sister, the guys in your life might not stock their first apartment with all the domestic gear they need, so why not pick up some pot holders or wine glasses?

They don't have to be L.L. Bean's Bison Bean Boots, but some serious winter gear will get more mileage than the scarf-glove-hat combo (especially for the baby brother who just moved to Boston). If he's already got what he needs, replace his old ski goggles or other winter gear he gets lots of use out of.

I don't know about you, but I am a fiend for giving gifts.

I've been buying presents since July; my closet is stacked with books and boxes I know my nearest and dearest will adore. Gift giving's always been something I excelled at, and after years of making my own lists and couseling friends on what their husband or baby sister would love, I'm finally sharing my present prowess with you! This isn't as much a gift guide as it is a guide to giving great gifts, and one I hope will serve you well this holiday season!

In addition to squealing over the amazing design work Chelsea of Buckets & Bunches did on the guides (you'll have to wait until tomorrow for the first of five–for brothers), I indulged this weekend in everything you can't, won't, or don't do with your sweetheart. John and his pal Daniel packed up 3 pounds of trail mix and headed to Yosemite before dawn on Saturday morning, so there was trashy TV in bed, hours curled up in the sun finishing a book, practicing my high notes in the living room. There were tacos and a pitcher of margaritas with a girlfriend, because a weekend isn't a weekend without tacos. Unsurprisingly, there was Christmas shopping and planning and a great deal of The Nutcracker, and there may have even been some ballet in the bedroom.

But when John came home yesterday afternoon, his clothes stinking of smoke and his cheeks ruddy from the cold, I couldn't have been happier. We spent the rest of the day curled up, recounting every dull moment we'd spent apart, then met my dear friend Adrian at SFO for a hand off of my favorite coconut gelato from Princeton's the Bent Spoon. It, and the homemade oatmeal chocolate chip cookies he included, made perfect ice cream sandwiches.

I finished Wayne Curtis' And a Bottle of Rum on the plane to Tulsa and I've been dreaming of a rum cocktail ever since. I have recipes for all kinds of holiday-appropriate rum drinks on the way, but before the snow becomes a permanent fixture I thought I'd share a libation that's delicious all year round!

El Presidente

1 1/2 oz rum
3/4 oz dry vermouth
3/4 oz curacao
1/2 tsp grenadine

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice; stir well, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

Notes: This Prohibition era cocktail was a favorite of thirsty Americans in Havana; while the original would have employed Bacardi, getting your hands on some high quality white rum (I'm particularly fond of Barbancourt, though Curtis waxes lyrically about Prichard's Distillery, based in Tennessee) will elevate this cocktail tenfold. Try to steer clear of Rose's Grenadine, and pick something with real pomegranate flavor–I can't say enough good things about Small Hand Foods' product. Cheers!

There are some things that have a certain Southern quality to them–pastel peonies and garden roses, classic, full skirted gowns, antique cars and dapper gentlemen in matching suits stand out in particular. These elements can lend an air of Southern charm to a wedding, even one as far from the South as this celebration in Ontario, Canada.

Krystle and Evan chose the Ancaster Mill, a former flour mill, for their venue; not surprisingly, a flour/flower theme was born, and the couple scouted Etsy and flea markets for every vintage flour canister, sieve and vessel they could get their hands on! Navy and pink invitations by Blush Design Studio reflected the couple's fondness for flowers, and Mirella of Rainflower Company made sure each treasured vase was overflowing with shades of pink, peach and yellow.

The bride chose a delicately textured Watters gown and a pair of embellished blush flats from Nine West; her bridesmaids wore blush dresses from Alfred Sung, along with striking navy pumps and matching pearl necklaces. Evan chose a navy three-piece suit and bowtie by Harry Rosen, while his groomsmen opted for more casual cuts and narrow ties.

And perhaps best of all, Lori of Lori Studios was on hand to capture each moment, and generously agreed to share her beautiful images! So, tell me what you think–does this gorgeous Ontario celebration have a touch of down home charm, or am I absolutely out of my mind?

It's no secret that I'm a sucker for a good monogram, but this pretty pink hankie trimmed with daisies and peonies has absolutely bewitched me-any ideas where I could get one just like it?

This weekend was a bit less bustling than usual, and I was so relieved! On Friday night, John and I had our dear friend Adrian, visiting from Manila, over for something other than the Manila Beer he's been drinking for years (really, just one brewery!), but I spent most of Saturday curled up with a terrible headache. Indian food that evening seemed to cure it, though, and we were up bright and early on Sunday morning.

John spent the early part of the day running errands and catching up with an old friend, so I organized each inch of our little home, then got down to the business of enjoying Southern Weddings V4 with a cup of Constant Comments tea (I think that might be where the blame lies for this hanky obsession). Then it was time for a little afternoon yoga, perusing the aisles of my favorite grocery store, Andronico's (tell me someone else loves the grocery store like I do!), reading in the sun while the temperatures are still warm and cooking up pork chops with roasted apples and a touch of brandy.

Vampire Blues

When I asked John for the recipe to a pumpkin cocktail called Ichabod's Last Ride he shook up years ago in Baltimore, he groaned at the errors of his youth and begged for time to recreate a pumpkin cocktail worthy of his name; when that was an enormous disaster, we thanked our lucky stars for the Internet, and a liquor cabinet ready for anything we could shake up!

Vampire Blues

1 1/2 oz of bourbon
1/2 oz of East India Solera Sherry
1/2 oz of fresh lemon juice
1/2 oz simple syrup
1 teaspoon pumpkin butter
2 dashes Angostura bitters
cinnamon stick

Combine bourbon, sherry, lemon juice, syrup, pumpkin butter and Angostura bitters in shaker with ice; shake for 10 seconds. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass, garnish with cinnamon stick.

I'm not usually a bourbon drinker, but between the sherry and the pumpkin butter, I promise you'll suddenly be singing that brown booze's praises!

Isn't this bit of Halloween ephemera darling? I still remember each and every house that handed out full sized candy bars in my hometown–never mind that there were only 100 houses!

This weekend was a whirlwind; we skipped to Tulsa Friday afternoon and joined up with John's family for late night room service. On Saturday we headed to Tulsa University to watch them trounce SMU–not a bad first football game! But even better than their win as far as we were concerned, Mike, John's younger brother, got more time on the field than ever before and managed to complete a first down (on the very first pass he's been thrown in a game)! To call Saturday "terrific" does it no justice, and it was the perfect start to his early birthday celebration-happy birthday, Mike!

But we were up with the birds on Sunday morning to get to the airport in time for our early morning flight; John had a concert on Sunday afternoon that we had to plan our Tulsa tour around. I was thanking my lucky stars for our on-time flights when I deposited John at school with an hour to spare. After the quickie concert, we both agreed a late afternoon paella and a glass of rosé was the perfect way to polish off a wonderful weekend.

Pimm's Cup

I like to consult John on any and all cocktails I feature, but I almost wish I'd kept my mouth shut about this week's Pimm's Cup. Apparently card carrying members of San Francisco's bartending elite have decided that DIY Pimm's are their pom poms, so what follows is a medium-sized batch of a homemade liquor you can buy at the store. It surprises me to admit it, but it's actually well worth the effort.

Pimm's Cup

3 oz Pimm's
Fresh mint
Cucumber
3/4 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
Ginger beer

Place 6 mint leaves and 2-3 cucumber slices in a shaker or bar glass, add lemon juice and gently muddle. Add Pimm's and ice, shake for 5 to 10 seconds. Strain into a Collins glass over ice, fill with ginger beer and garnish.

Homemade Pimm's

3 oz London Dry Gin
3 oz Sweet Vermouth
3 oz Lillet
3 oz Dubonnet
3 oz Campari

Add all ingredients to a pitcher, stir until combined.

Notes: While John picks Beefeater Gin for the London Dry and Carpano Antica for the sweet vermouth, the plain truth is that all these ingredients are mixed, then combined with fruit and ginger beer–no need to run out and buy a new bottle of gin. That said, the Lillet, Dubonnet and Campari are pretty important flavors and hard to substitute.

You'll have Pimm's enough for at least four cocktails, but it will stay good in your refrigerator for some time should you only be requiring one. While I always thought my recent interest in the Pimm's Cup was a maturing of my palate, it turns out it was just better booze–who would have guessed?

We're off to Tulsa for football, family and an early birthday celebration-what are you up to this weekend? Hope it's wonderful, whatever it may be!

Andrew and Whitney

I can't resist Swiss dot any more than I can resist blue blazers with brass buttons or gingham, and when you throw all those gems into a single wedding, you've got one wonderful Wednesday!

Whitney and Andrew were married at Point O' Woods, Fire Island where the bride spent summers as a kid. Since this particular portion of the island doesn't allow cars, guests walked along the beach or cruised over on their bicycles to toast the newlyweds-isn't that darling?

Modern invitations designed by Whitney Hays and printed by Boxcar Press introduced the fresh white and chartreuse color palette, echoed in arrangements of dendrobium orchids, roses, hydrangeas and sweet peas by Robert Clark and the striped linens. The bride wore a Christos gown and Kate Spade peep toes, while her maids dazzled in matching green dresses; Andrew and his groomsmen chose classic navy blazers paired with khaki slacks and green gingham bow ties.

But arguably my favorite part of this wedding? The tent, from Stamford Tent–I just can't resist a big white tent on a vivid green lawn! The whole affair was coordinated by Dixie Todd of Party Resources, and beautifully captured by Sarah Rhoads, who generously shared these photos first spotted on Style Me Pretty!

You've all had those weeks that thoroughly trounce you, right? Well I've found that unholy quantities of Indian food on Friday night will really speed up recovery, as does a handsome new fiancé and the rose gold bauble he picked! I'm so delighted that I finally get to spill!

So besides staring idly at my ring finger, which John says is ridiculous but I'm fairly certain he finds endearing, this weekend was just like any other. It was, of course, 20 degrees too warm for October activites here in San Francisco, so I drank apple cider and we carved pumpkins (with our initials, naturally). We indulged in an outrageous cheese filled with truffles and paired with a rosé cremant, and celebrated another Golden Hurricane win while I fretted about what one wears to Tulsa, Oaklahoma (any feedback would be appreciated–we leave Friday). But best of all, we laughed, we held hands, and we smiled.

I hope you all did plenty of smiling this weekend, too!

Peach-Thyme Bellini

Since moving to San Francisco three years ago, I've come to realize that I am a seasons person. I love the crisp, crunchy leaves in autumn, the way it smells just before it snows, the first hint of green as spring unfolds and the hours by the pool only permissible (or enjoyable) in summer.

San Francisco's got none of that.

So I've found I have to fake it, and the best way to do that is with food. In the summer, we eat spicy foods to mimic real heat, and we turn to roasted vegetables and savory spices in the fall even if the temperatures remain the same. One of my favorite fall flavors is thyme, and when I saw a cocktail that combined lush peaches, bubbly and this aromatic little herb, I was sold!

Peach-Thyme Bellini

1/4 pound of peaches, approximately 1 1/2 cups chopped
1/4 cup of sugar
1/2 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice
5 sprigs of fresh thyme
1 bottle of Prosecco or sparkling wine

In a heavy saucepan, heat the peaches, sugar, lemon juice, and thyme sprigs over medium heat until the mixture is thick and syrupy, approximately 8 – 10 minutes. Remove the peach mixture from heat and allow the mixture cool. Remove the thyme sprigs and discard. Purée the peach mixture in a blender until smooth.

Spoon three tablespoons of the peach purée into a champagne flute. Pour in Prosecco or sparking wine and stir until combined. Garnish with peach slice or sprig of thyme.

Notes: I halved the original recipe, because how often are you making brunch cocktails for 10? If you're planning on going on an elegant bender, just double your quantities! The peach purée can be made up to 2 days in advance, so feel free to make the celebration last the whole weekend long.

I got the best email the other day; Nikki of Perpetually Engaged spotted a birthday card I sent to Punctuation Mark's Elie and told me I simply had to start marketing my handwriting–I could practically hear a cadre of my elementary school teachers howling in their classrooms! The truth is that I love to practice loops and scrolls inspired by all the lovely invitations and envelopes I've admired.

This peachy suite by Cheree Berry caught my attention right away–how can you resist the date calligraphed into the corner of the envelope liner, for heaven's sake? That's what I call attention to detail!

Julie and Kyle

Growing up, I was always a bit fearful of my mom's best friend; Merlinda performed smudging ceremonies, encouraged us to smoke from her peace pipe, built a "goddess pool" in her yard that was clearly a giant mud pit full of murky water, and bought a valley in New Mexico where I was sure she planned to dance naked around a yurt and kidnap my mother. My 8 year old self was sure Merlinda was out of her mind and that New Mexico was a bad place to vacation.

Luckily this wedding has warmed me to the Land of Enchantment. No really, that's New Mexico's official nickname. Maybe not enough to visit Merlinda any time soon, but certainly enough to appreciate the jaw-dropping beauty of Jesse Leake's photos.

This celebration brought together the couple's Native American and Irish traditions in the city that stole their hearts-Santa Fe, and reflected their love and sense of family. The couple chose Encantado, a stunning Auberge resort, for the ceremony and reception location; invitations, menu cards and programs designed by the couple with the help of Suann Song of Simple Song Designs, were decorated with miniature four leaf clover charms, clothespins printed with the words "love" and feathers.

Julie wore a simple Priscilla of Boston gown complete with pockets, a simple pair of J.Crew flats and the most darling braided belt, while Kyle chose a classic Brooks Brothers suit. The bouquet Julie carried and those gorgeous arrangements were inspired by her favorite shop, Anthropologie, and featured shades of peach, cream, purple, yellow and pink designed by Andrea Soorikian.

The pair was married on an American Indian rug, and guests sat on rustic wooden benches around the couple. Buckeye seeds, a good luck charm in native American folklore, were placed on ceremony programs in groups of 15 to represent the day Kyle and Julie met. After exchanging "five promises" instead of traditional vows, the couple shared their first dance, a change in program order I just adore!

The reception featured a single long table covered in a natural linen tablecloth and burlap runner. Vintage amber jars, driftwood, turquoise votives and herringbone towels the bride and groom scouted on Etsy and in vintage shops gave the table an organic beauty, and coordinator Alicia Troxell of Barnwood & Birch (and this gem of a wedding!) made sure each detail the couple had worked so hard on looked perfect on the big day. After a home style meal with a New Mexican twist–steak or halibut, mashed potatoes, green beans, calabacitas and green chile cornbread–pecan pie was the perfectly sweet ending to a day full of love, heritage and joy.

My weekends are, like I'm sure yours are, fairly precious. I like to think that I work my tush off all week to truly earn two lazy days of perfect quiet, and this week was no exception on either score.

We made our usual trip to Mountain View where I sunned myself with apple cider in one hand and book in the other (And a Bottle of Rum: The History of the New World in Ten Cocktails). We made a trip to San Francisco Brewcraft to pick up yeast for a batch of spiced apple cider we'll be serving at Thanksgiving, recipe forthcoming. We devoured tacos and the Tulsa-UAB game at our favorite sports bar/Mexican joint on Saturday night, and on Sunday morning, I woke up to a perfectly gray day and another gorgeous breakfast cooked by John.

We scrubbed each corner and shelf clean between curling up with the West Wing season 2 and every hot beverage imaginable–it was the perfect imitation of a real fall weekend, since the only thing that's changed these days in San Francisco is the time the sun sets. And after an early Indian feast, John was sound asleep before 10–he was snoring too sweetly to wake up!

Tequila Martinez

It's easy to assign spirits to seasons-holiday drinks are always laden with rum, tequila drinks reappear each year at Cinco de Mayo and so on. But the truth is that most liquors are far more flexible than you might originally think-this tequila cocktail won't have you thinking for one minute of guacamole!

Tequila Martinez

1 oz of reposado tequila
1/2 oz of mescal
1 1/2 oz of sweet vermouth
1/4 of maraschino liquor
2 dashes of orange bitters

Combine tequila, mescal, vermouth, maraschino liquor and bitters in a shaker with ice; shake for no more than 10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, garnish with an orange twist.

Notes: This cocktail is a variation on the classic Martinez, a gin-based cocktail that may actually be father to both the Martini and the Manhattan. This Tequila Martinez is John's own recipe; many bartenders do not use mescal, and chose a dry or blanc vermouth instead of a sweet vermouth, traditionally included in the Martinez.

If you're feeling flush, a bottle of Carpano Antica sweet vermouth is well worth the investment; you'll never drink another sweet vermouth again. As for tequila, John suggests El Tesoro but any reposado tequila made of blue agave will do. Chose any mescal you like (or have on the shelf), and do try to find a bottle of Luxardo maraschino liquor–I can't tell you how stylish that bottle looks in our liquor cabinet! Cheers!

My parents recently unearthed years worth of Christmas lists and, as it turns out, my 8 year old self was obsessed with paper. I asked for monogrammed stationery as a 3rd grader, so is it any wonder that I've been steadfastly buying the same ivory cards for years?

But when I came across Erin Napier of Lucky Luxe's gorgeous silhouetted stationery suite on her personal blog, Make something good today, I practically fell off my chair; ecru paper from Crane's and that rich grey letterpress could easily woo me away from my monogram!

Just when I thought I'd never get to an apple orchard, I find this gem of a wedding–thank Heavens for couples with a love of the great outdoors, not to mention seriously gorgeous taste!

Siobhan and Luca were married at Vine Hill House in Sonoma County where they made use of both the property's gorgeous outdoor spaces and that magnificent barn (tell me you're not still swooning over those first look photos). They worked closely with Lisa Blake of Bellissima Vita, and their photographers, Lisa and James of Ella Jae, to bring French-Italian style to this apple orchard in wine country.

Siobhan chose a stunning embroidered lace gown by Monique Lhuillier and a darling pair of blue J.Crew peep toes festooned with bows. Luca wore a classic navy suit and a monogrammed pink dress shirt paired with matching cufflinks and a sky blue tie. San Francisco florist Cherries Flowers created the lush bouquets and arrangements of English garden roses and sweet peas; it was a sweet reminder of all the Cherries bouquets Luca had sent his bride to be during their courtship.

After an outdoor ceremony officiated by close friends of the bride and groom, guests dined en plein air; a feast catered by Elaine Bell was followed by pies from Butter Love Bakeshop and the couple's favorite ice cream from Straus Family Creamery. Friends and family left their well wishes in wine bottles labeled with various anniversary years and tucked into an antique French riddling rack; Siobhan and Luca plan to crack each one open and celebrate the love and wisdom of their nearest and dearest with every anniversary.

This old European cut diamond engagement ring from Doyle & Doyle (one of my favorite places for vintage baubles) features a 1.65 carat center stone plus more diamonds and sapphires to boot!

After a very hectic month, this weekend was a slice of pure luxury (and we didn't have to go anywhere at all!). While John spent Friday night at a concert given by guitarist Kazuhito Yamashita, I enjoyed some quiet time with my first Kindle library book, Committed, which I can't recommend more highly. With the best empanadas I've had in the states from Hollow in our bellies, we headed down to Mountain View Saturday morning so John could give a few guitar lessons. I enjoyed more reading and apple cider in the sunshine, and then we took to the Stanford Shopping Center for a bit of what my mother likes to call "fishing". Laden down with a new navy peacoat and several ties from J.Crew, some fresh button downs to wear to the office and plenty of replacement wine glasses from Crate & Barrel, not to mention the Martha Stewart colander John couldn't resist, we declared it a successful expedition and headed home.

A late-afternoon lunch paired with an episode or two of our newest discovery, The West Wing (I know, where were we in 2000?) was perfect relaxing, and we toasted the restorative day at Mel's Drive In over mashed potatoes and gravy.

Sunday's goal was a spectacular breakfast; the pain au chocolat, brioche toast, French omlette with Gruyere, roasted potatoes and caffeine from our weekend haunt Trouble Coffee that John ferried back in a vintage Stanley thermos was out of this world. So was, not surprisingly, the nap that followed. I whispered to John more than once that this weekend felt like a week long vacation, and I can't tell you how much I needed it–thank goodness for lazy, luxurious weekends!

So how was your mini holiday, or are you enjoying a long weekend thanks to Christopher Columbus? Someone please tell me they went apple picking–I hunted high and low for a Bay Area orchard and came up with only a few highway-adjacent contenders!

Have no fear, faithful readers; your requests for an autumnal cocktail are about to be answered! While I think most cocktails are equal opportunity drinkers, there's something to be said for the particular flavors of fall, and this little libation is my very favorite thing to sip as the leaves start to turn.

Poire Plus

Fill a champagne flute with 3/4 oz of Poire Williams or other pear eau-de-vie, then top with your favorite sparkler. Garnish with a pear slice, if desired.

This is another outrageously simple cocktail, but there's no fighting such a divine drink! I would chose a fairly dry Champagne or Crémant for this libation, so the flavors of the pear brandy won't be overpowered by a sweeter sparkler.

Wouldn't you know that after my claims of pearl preference yesterday, I couldn't get diamonds out of my head! Something about this gorgeous oval setting has me completely mesmerized-doesn't the halo look the littlest bit pink? Heavenly!
