Navy Grog

Friday, May 30, 2014

Navy Grog was first served to British sailors in the mid-1700s to stave off scurvy during long periods at sea; though the original was simply a combination of rum, water, lime and brown sugar, this cocktail has been reinvented by the tiki movement into something altogether more delicious! John and I are partial to this boozy combination of Don the Beachcomber and Trader Vic's classic recipes.

Navy Grog

1 oz white rum
1 oz demerara rum
1 oz dark rum
3/4 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
3/4 oz freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
1 oz honey syrup
1/4 oz allspice dram
soda water (optional)

Combine rums, lime and grapefruit juice, honey syrup and allspice dram in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds. Strain into a Collins glass or goblet filled with crushed ice. Top with soda water if desired and garnish with a slice of lime and a cherry.

Notes: Three different rums might seem like overkill, but you'll be delighted by the complexity and depth they bring to this slushy summer sipper. We added the allspice dram of Trader Vic's recipe to Don the Beachcomber's classic; our favorite is St. Elizabeth's, but you can also make your own if you're looking for a weekend DIY. As for the soda, you might want to thin this rather rich cocktail with a bit of sparkling water if it's a particularly warm day, but the unadulterated version reigns supreme in our frequently chilly San Francisco apartment. Cheers!

This week I'm loving warm weather, long lunches and new freckles–to say nothing of these lovely links!
Tell me, what are you crazy about this week?

These William & Mary alums tied the knot at their alma mater, and the photographs by Michael & Carina Photography via Elizabeth Anne Designs are my kind of classic.

This NYC elopement captured by Emilia Jane and featured on Snippet & Ink absolutely oozes chic.

Get married in Charleston? The Wedding Chicks don't have to tell me twice! This Southern celebration photographed by Austin Gros is irresistible.

Gorgeous gown, lush blooms and an adorable couple–this Asheville fête captured by Graham Terhune Photography from Southern Weddings has it all!

Lindsey & Michael

Lindsey and Michael may have grown up together, but it wasn't until a chance meeting years later at a bar that the two became a couple–and not long after, they decided to tie the knot! Coordinator Lynne Enos helped the couple to plan their picture perfect Cape Cod wedding in a palette of navy blue and blush.

The bride spent years working in fashion and had long dreamed about her perfect wedding dress; her Reem Acra gown with its layers of tulle and organza and twisted raw silk bodice fulfilled all her little girl fantasies. Diamond studs and a tennis bracelet, along with a simple veil and a full bouquet of white blooms by Lilacs Floral Design elegantly completed Lindsey's bridal look. Her dozen bridesmaids wore floor length Joanna August dresses in shades of blush and nude, while Michael and his passel of groomsmen looked handsome in navy suits from Bonobos and striped Brooks Brother's ties.

A navy and white stationery suite by Ruby the Fox set the tone for Lindsey and Michael's celebration–classic with a touch of whimsy. After a traditional Catholic ceremony at St. Elizabeth Seton, the new Mr and Mrs headed to Oyster Harbors Club where a row boat full of beer welcomed guests to the reception. Every detail, from custom made pillows to match the invitation envelope liners for the Adirondack chairs on the lawn to lush arrangements of white and green blooms by Lilacs Floral Design, was as impeccable as the cloudless Cape Cod sky. After the newlyweds cut into their 4 tier confection from Delicious Desserts, they spent their first evening as husband and wife just as they had on the night they reconnected–cutting a rug on the dance floor with a little help from SOHO of Night Shift Entertainment. And luckily for the couple, Sweet Monday Photography captured every dreamy detail from their big day. Satin Slippers

We were ushered out of the office early on Friday, so I jumped on a train and headed straight home–only to find myself stuck in a tunnel with the weekend ahead! Eventually I made it home, and the moment that I'd finished going through some mail and straightening up the house, John arrived to whisk me off to dinner. We met up with our usual Friday night dining companions and his Mom, and though it had been a look week for everyone, by the time we polished off a dosa and our first beers, everyone was chuckling. After our feast, we headed across the street for gelato and espresso before heading home to bed. John and I started the season finale of Law and Order: SVU only to discover the next morning that we'd fallen asleep moments after the opening credits!

John stayed in bed as long as he could on Saturday morning, but eventually he leapt into the kitchen to start on our breakfast. While potatoes roasted, my guy ran down to the local co-op for avocados and Sightglass Coffee while I brewed tea and caught up on email. After poached eggs over avocado toast, we jumped back into bed with that episode of SVU we hadn't managed to finish the night before. After our morning indulgence, we both got to work–my editorial calendar and to-do lists on the kitchen table, John's metronome ticking in the living room. After a bit of midday housekeeping, John ran a few errands while I soaked up a little inspiration and listened to this great podcast from New Hampshire Public Radio all about weddings. We sweated out last night's indulgences with his and hers circuit workouts before heading to the market for supplies, and decided to make a late-night paella. We toasted with two glasses of white Rioja and curled up on the couch with an episode of The West Wing before bed.

John woke us both up early on Sunday morning, and soon delivered me breakfast in bed–toasted three cheese semolina topped with a poached egg and a cup of tea. After breakfast John got to practicing while I pulled out my laptop and pulled together some truly gorgeous upcoming content. We pulled out the butane torch for a little afternoon DIY, and I played around with fonts for an invitation mockup (more on that to come!) before trying a new tortilla recipe for a late afternoon supper. After our repast, John worked on a brewing project while I dug into my current read and as it grew dark, we hopped in the car for an evening drive. Back at home we curled up with The West Wing and a few squares of dark chocolate before calling it a night.

Though my alarm went off at its usual hour on Monday, John silenced it and we promptly headed back to sleep. We were up early enough though, and enjoyed breakfast potatoes and avocado toast with poached eggs while watching the finale of American Dream Builders, which John and I have been obsessed with. We moved onto his & hers activities before I headed out to meet a girlfriend for an afternoon of chitchat; we caught up over glasses of prosecco enjoyed alfresco and took a stroll through Hayes Valley. One of our dearest pals arrived at our apartment not long after I made it home, and we spent the rest of the day making plans, talking strategy and eventually, eating and drinking. There was a trip to the neighborhood co-op for cheese and crackers, her charming paramour arrived with a growler full of Petite Syrah and we had a late supper of pesto before saying goodnight.

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend? Trips to the beach, a glass of rosé at a café table in the sunshine, or perhaps a bit of gardening?

Happy Memorial Day!

Eastside Rickey

Friday, May 23, 2014

There's nothing like a tall glass of something cold on a hot day, and the Eastside Rickey, with lime, mint and cucumber might be the perfect summer cocktail. Best of all, you can omit the gin for a non-alcoholic sipper this Memorial Day!

  Eastside Rickey

2 oz gin
1 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
3/4 oz syrup
8 mint leaves
sliced cucumber
soda water

Gently muddle mint leaves and cucumber in a cocktail shaker. Add gin, lime juice, syrup and ice, and shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds. Double strain into an ice-filled Collins glass, top with soda and garnish with a cucumber slice.

Notes: International gins like Hendrick's or Tanqueray No. 10, both with citrus notes and plenty of pep, would be particularly lovely in this summer sipper, but grab whatever you've got in the liquor cabinet and whip yourself up a drink–it's the weekend after all! Cheers, and Happy Memorial Day!

Neely & Rob

Wednesday, May 21, 2014

Weddings are an amazing opportunity for a couple to get creative, but when the new Mrs is a photographer and designer, you can be sure she'll be adding her own beautiful touches to the big day. Tennessee's Front Porch Farms was the perfect place for Neely and Rob, who first met in a Nashville bar, to tie the knot in a thoughtful celebration.

Neely wore a lace Lela Rose gown fittingly called "The Farm"; pearl studs and bracelets, chiffon flowers in her soft updo by Amanda Gros and a fingertip length veil completed her classic look, while flat mint sandals were perfect for walking the Farms' 32 acres. She carried a fresh white and green bouquet full of olive branches by Jaclyn Journey, while her maids, in blush silk chiffon J.Crew dresses, carried smaller versions. Rob and his groomsmen chose navy suits from J.Crew, paired with gingham shirts and slim navy ties.

Starting with a modern navy suite by designers Perky Bros, each detail of Neely and Rob's wedding day was carefully considered with simplicity in mind. After a ceremony on the front lawn beneath an oak tree, the newlyweds joined their guests for cocktails, lawn games and hors d'oeuvres by the pool. The open-air reception pavilion was set with long farm-style tables; burlap runners and garlands of olive branches and white flowers by Jaclyn Journey were equal parts rustic and romantic. After a Southern supper and slices of wedding cake by The Chef’s Market, The Downtown Band's best covers got the couple's dearest and dearest on the dance floor. Neely and Rob enjoyed one last glass of Champagne before saying goodnight to their guests, and they set out on their honeymoon to celebrate the start of their life as husband and wife.

Many thanks to Brooke Boling for sharing these gorgeous images with me; tell me, do you have a favorite detail from Neely and Rob's big day?
