Today, I'm wishing my guy a very, very happy birthday after a weekend full of celebrations in his honor! His brother flew into Oakland and meet John at the distillery on Friday afternoon; a few hours of manual labor later, I met them at home and we headed over to our regular haunt for a big celebratory dinner with our best pals. After three dosas, six curries and plenty of naan, we hurried across the street to wedge our way into the gelato shop just moments before they closed for sweet treats and espresso.

I woke up the house early the next morning, and while John and Mike went for a run, I did some running of my own–errands, of course! I picked up a red velvet cake and Champagne, and I couldn't resist a few yellow peonies at Flowers of the Valley. After some cheddar-chive scones and coffee from John's new birthday Chemex, the three of us checked email and cleaned up before hopping in the car for a trek across the Bay Bridge to Berkeley. John had meet the owners of Smoke Berkeley a few months ago at St. George and he's been dreaming about pulled pork and BBQ brisket ever since! His birthday weekend was the perfect time to make the trip; we drank iced tea and ate a pile of smoked meat in the East Bay sunshine before heading back home where both boys enjoyed long naps. Our dear pals joined us at home that afternoon for an intensive brewing project that lasted into the evening; when things finally started to wrap up, we managed to snag a table at Nopalito. We ordered all of the restaurant's appetizer offerings and each enjoyed a Killer Bee before saying goodnight; back at home, Mike and I sang "Happy Birthday" to John and cut into his perfect red velvet layer cake. Later that night once all the lights had been turned off, John melted my heart when he whispered, "This is the best birthday I've ever had."

We slept in on Sunday, and the boys headed to Andronico's for supplies while I started the roasted potatoes and picked up the house. Shortly after brunch, we made our way across the bridge to drop Mike off at the airport and then headed back into the city where we ran a few put-off errands and enjoyed a cup of coffee. Back at home, we tackled the to do's on our list, from practice to exercise and lots in between! We had an early supper of pesto and a slice of red velvet cake before getting back to work, and after crossing off a sufficient number of tasks, we curled up with a classic–Father of the Bride–before bedtime.

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend? Toasting California Chrome's Derby win with a julep, or throwing an early Cinco de Mayo celebration? We've got one more night of birthday festivities ahead–here's to fish tacos and Tecate!
