Blossoming

The last few weeks have been difficult, stressful and even a bit surreal, but I feel like John and I truly sucked the marrow and goodness out of this weekend as a result.

We met up with friends for Indian Food Friday, each of us bringing enough beer, wine or cider to easily intoxicate everyone, and after a spicy feast, headed back to our house for a special project. One of our pal's friends was getting married, and she was thrilled to round up four opera singers and a guitarist to record the love song she sings to her fiancé. It was two hours of harpsichord sound effects, chord progressions and giggling, but we got it done and managed to have the very best time. As everyone said their goodbyes around midnight, John and I looked at each other and wondered why we didn't host salons more often!

I woke up to John's key in the front door–he'd snuck out while I was still dozing for coffee and a coconut at Trouble. He poached me an egg and roasted some potatoes while I was still rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, and after breakfast we both curled up with our respective projects for some quiet working time with all the windows thrown open. Finally the 70º weather was just too delicious to ignore, and after a stroll through Golden Gate Park, we headed to Brewcraft for beer supplies. We grabbed a roast chicken on the way home and had a picnic supper in the park, complete with French potato salad and Perrier. As it started to grow cold, we headed home to read and relax–John had a recital early Sunday morning and it meant an early bedtime for both of us.

We were up before the sun and had to struggle against a heavy layer of early morning fog that made it almost irresistible to climb back into bed. Instead we headed to the conservatory, where John gave a wonderful recital of French and Spanish compositions. The two of us and our dear friend (who also sang on the recital) headed to South for cocktails, then strolled around Hayes Valley doing a little shopping, eating and sipping along the way. We (accidentally) crashed a birthday party and had the most wonderful time fêting the fabulous birthday girl; after a slice of Bi-Rite ice cream cake and a glass of Champagne, we finally headed home, feeling certain that was how weekends were meant to be spent.

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend? Start a new project, curl up with a great book or take a little adventure, perhaps?

  5. Love reading about your weekends! I love the idea of hosting a salon; what a better place the world would be if more people came together in that way!
