Joyride

This week is all about the many gorgeous shades of fall–yellow, orange and even a bit of blush pink!
I dashed out of the office on Friday to meet John before an early curtain at the opera; we'd scored tickets to the final dress rehearsal of The Barber of Seville, along with students from across Northern California. Their presence electrified the delightful production, and it was truly a fabulous Friday night at the opera. Once our pal got out of costume and into his sweatshirt, we grabbed a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and headed to our neighborhood for a late night Indian feast. We tried some new dishes, rediscovered a love for old favorites and were the last table at the restaurant. After supper John was in the mood for an espresso, so we headed across the street where AJ and I shared a salted caramel affogato and then headed home to bed.

John was up early on Saturday morning, but after a long week of late nights and early mornings, I was happy to sleep in! My sweet guy had scrambled eggs with fresh herbs and roasted potatoes with onions and garlic ready when I tumbled out of bed, and we wrote out to-do lists over French press coffee and English breakfast tea. John indulged in some dusting and sweeping while I dug into work I was looking forward to, and that afternoon we ran a few errands before cozying up in the living room–John with his guitar and Schubert scores, me with piles of gorgeous inspiration. We had pork chops and pear cider in the fridge, so I decided to cook up a decadent Saturday night supper; pan-friend pear slices and seared pork chops were perfect with mashed potatoes, a cider-mustard sauce and a glass of Pinot noir. After dinner John and I both indulged in a little more work before crawling into a freshly made bed with an episode (or two) of The Killing.

We were both up early on Sunday morning, but when John told me he'd take care of breakfast, I was happy to stay in my pjs and wait for a hot cup of tea! We munched on potato pancakes (thank you, leftovers) and an omelette with herbs and cheddar cheese, then spent the morning curled up enjoying one another's company. John was off to the distillery before too long, leaving me to fill up the day with long phone calls with my Mama and dear old friends, reading Matchbook Magazine's latest issue, working on my Christmas list and curling up with a good book. That afternoon I made a quick run to our local co-op for ricotta, and after some exercise, John and I tried our hands at ricotto gnocchi. The results were heavenly, and we shared a glass (the last in the bottle) of Pinot noir before heading to bed.

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend? Raking leaves, strolling through your neighborhood or curling up with a good book, perhaps?

  4. Oh, Darling! I was in your neck of the woods this weekend. I intended to email you to go for a cup of coffee or a cocktail and I got the Flu and stayed in bed in the Hyatt down near the Embarcadero. I was bed-ridden for two days and finally drove out of SF on Tuesday morning. Another time dear friend!
