Peachy

Each fall, San Franciscans will get one glorious week; temperatures will be in the 70s and 80s, the fog will lift and you can go out to dinner without bringing a cardigan. You pull out every pair of sandals you own, forage through your vacation clothes for sundresses and shorts, and every person (or at least it seems like it) goes to the beach. That was this weekend.

We celebrated on Friday night by, of course, getting Indian food with our dear friend and favorite third wheel. After a feast of paneer dishes, prawn vindaloo and a spring dosa, we headed home for cocktails; the gentlemen drank Hemingway Daiquiris while I sipped a ruby red Americano in my pjs, and we said goodnight after making plans for the rest of the weekend.

John was up early on Sunday morning to find a coconut–he swears they're the very best cure of an evening over over-imbibing, especially when enjoyed with an espresso at Trouble. We made a simple breakfast of poached eggs over avocado toast with roasted fingerling potatoes, and soon John was off to an afternoon meeting and a shift at St. George's. I took advantage of the afternoon to flip through the latest issues of Matchbook Magazine and Martha Stewart Weddings, dig into some gorgeous wedding inspiration and take a stroll towards the Pacific with a new book. After a snack of cheese, crackers and fruit, I poured myself a glass of iced tea and started working on an essay that's long been in the works–imagine my surprise when I looked up to see it was dark! John's commute home nearly doubled thanks to traffic on the new Bay Bridge, but when he got home there was a spicy bowl of penne all'arrabbiata and a cold glass of Perrier waiting for him, along with an episode or two of our latest Sorkin obsession, The Newsroom.

We happily slept in on Sunday morning and indulged in a big breakfast of scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes, chipotle-tomatillo salsa, guacamole and plenty of corn tortillas. Over french press coffee and English Breakfast tea, we planned our mornings and learned a little new music. I settled in with scores and my laptop while John pulled out his guitar, and we worked in companionable silence until our pal arrived for another afternoon of brewing. While the boys worked over the steaming cauldron, I did a little ballet-inspired exercise, re-read the fall issue of Martha Stewart Weddings and prepared for the week ahead. When the work was done, the three of us headed to a local Vietnamese restaurant for pho–the perfect antidote to a chilly, foggy night!

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend–cheering for your favorite team, enjoying an alfresco cocktail or looking for the first signs of fall?
