For me, summer smells like honeysuckle–enormous swaths of it covered the hunter green shed by our pool, and as the days grew warmer, the sweet scent would waft through the thick, muggy air. The only thing missing from those afternoons laying by the pool was a Maridel.
Maridel
2 oz Cathead honeysuckle vodka
1/2 oz freshly squeezed lime juice
3/4 oz cucumber-infused simple syrup
basil leaves
In a shaker, gently press 4 or 5 basil leaves into the cucumber simple syrup; add vodka and lime juice, shake with ice. Double strain into an ice-filled rocks glass and garnish with a lime wheel and basil leaf.
Notes: To make cucumber simple syrup, peel cucumber and cut into 1/4" pieces to steep in simple syrup (1 cup sugar, 1 cup water). The cucumber syrup will keep in your refrigerator, and would make a delicious addition to soda water, juleps and practically anything else you can think of–cheers!
Oooh! Sounds so refreshing!

I miss the smell of honeysuckle so much. There's not enough of it here. It ran rampant in the woods behind my grandma's house and the air was always so sweet.
ReplyDeleteHoneysuckle is one of my favorite scents, I'm starting to see more of it in the culinary world, which is new to me (and intriguing, as well.) Honeysuckle vodka, who knew?
