Flower Child

Don't ask me how it happened, but my Mama and I have personal style almost a million miles apart; while you'll spot me in polka dots and stripes, you're much more likely to find her in crochet and earth tones, rocking fabulous curly hair. This week, inside by her Love Child style, this prep is going boho!

This week didn't go quite as planned, and John had to postpone his recital (who could have guessed there such a thing as too much practice?) but we weren't going to let that get in the way of a birthday weekend! He picked me up from the office on Friday afternoon and after a cocktail hour at home, we headed to our traditional date night spot with one of John's dear friends visiting from Chicago in tow! After a feast and a bottle of home-brewed Saison, we dropped Mark off at a concert and headed home to enjoy a quiet house and a few episodes of Frasier.

John bounded out of bed early on Saturday morning to make it to a hot yoga class–I felt a little embarrassed staying under the covers, but I get dizzy in warm rooms! I had the morning to myself, which meant blogging with a cup of tea by my side and breakfast tacos with avocado. John and I indulged in a bit of mid-morning snuggling before attacking a little home organization with vigor; a few hours and a full recycling bin later, we'd cleaned out every cabinet and drawer of superfluous junk. We ran a few errands, then headed for Upper Fillmore for banh mi at Bun Mee, one of the birthday boy's favorite meals. We buttoned up our coats and headed home, happy to curl up as the weather started to grow cold and dark. Mark joined us a little later for tea before spending the night, and when the clock struck midnight, I quietly sang "Happy Birthday" to a half-asleep John.

The boys were up early for Americanos at Trouble Coffee and a little bonding; what they didn't realize was that I was wide awake, too! I took advantage of the time to catch up on email and The New York Times, then we met up for a beautiful birthday brunch at Le Zinc. We ate on the back patio and each took our last bite just as a rain began! A stroll through Noe Valley was the perfect antidote to our rich morning meal, then John and Mark headed downtown while I made birthday cake! After a little more wedding loveliness, catching up with my mom and one of my dearest friends, and some yoga, John returned and we curled up to while away the rest of the afternoon. An order of Indian take-out was just what John wanted, and I was happy to oblige; a slice of cake and a glass of milk were a sweet ending to a delicious, low-key birthday celebration!

  1. Isn't funny how different our style taste can be from our Mother's? As I get older, I find myself liking more and more of the same things my Mom did, so maybe she was right all along! Hehe. Hope your week is off to a great start :) xo

  7. I'm jealous of your cocktail hours at home! That's what I'd like to do for a date, but inviting strange men to your apartment is a bad idea.
