Kir

Looks like a pretty heavenly Friday afternoon, doesn't it? I think I'm going to beeline to the nearest bistro and order an aperitif!

Named for Canon Félix Kir, mayor of Dijon from 1945 to 1968, the Kir is made with crème de cassis and white wine, traditionally Aligoté. This libation was popularized after the Second World War when the mayor would offer it to visiting delegations to promote two of Dijon's most important agricultural products–a genius marketing campaign if ever there was one!

There are untold iterations of this cocktail, from a Cardinal with red wine to a Kir with sparkling hard cider, but if you're feeling particularly celebratory this Friday evening, try combining half an ounce of cassis with Champagne or sparkling wine for a Kir Royale–cheers!

  2. I learn so much from these posts, Lena! It feels pretty good to be one of the only people in my group of friends who can order something other than a rum and Coke at a bar :P
