Aviation

Friday, January 18, 2013

Funny enough, there was a time in my life when I didn't like gin. I didn't like a lot of other things then, including avocados or runny egg yolks, but I'm happy to say that we all along quite nicely now (as evidenced by the three bottles of gin in the liquor cabinet and the poached eggs I eat over avocado toast most weekday evenings). This cocktail wasn't the only reason, but it is certainly one of my favorites, to drink gin!

Aviation

2 oz gin
1 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
3/4 oz Maraschino
1 barspoon of crème de violette
1/4-1/2 oz syrup

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice; shake for 10 seconds, then strain into a small cocktail or coupe glass.

Notes: Crème de violette was once an impossible product to find, but if you live in big cities, you should be able to score a bottle of Rothman & Winter from an upscale package store. Luckily though, this cocktail doesn't suffer at all from the omission of the purple liquor–except in color. When John shook one up last Sunday, he pulled out the Plymouth Gin and Luxardo Maraschino, but you could use nearly any gin for an Aviation–though I would steer clear of green gins like Cadenhead's Old Raj for this particular sipper. Cheers!

  1. I love the Aviation! And I have to say I was the same way with Avacados, so thank you! People thought I was nuts living in California not liking them until one day it just clicked.

  5. Oh, this looks just delightful, the colour alone is making me swoon! I have never heard of it before but I will be on the hunt for the crème de violette this weekend!

  6. I also hated gin, after an unfortunate college experience! Now it's growing on me (though I still get ill at the thought of a gin and tonic), thanks to the French 75 and such!
