Labor Day

Monday, September 3, 2012

John and his dear friend met me at the office on Friday evening, and while I'd missed the first round of Scotch, we were determined not to let that spoil the night. After ordering what seemed like the entire menu from our favorite Indian place (for the first Friday night in ages!) and drinking some terrific local beers, we returned Daniel to his neighborhood and headed to Noe Valley for tiki drinks and vintage records with another great pal. Bryndon was disappointed when we headed home so early–we usually leave long after public transportation has stopped running–but we were happy to be curled up in bed just after one.

We were up early on Saturday, and quite determined for it to be a productive day. We caught up on the news, then walked to a little café for breakfast; after buckwheat pancakes and poached eggs, we strolled home hand in hand. We figured we'd earned a few episodes of Breaking Bad–we're both truly and completely obsessed, and now I'm telling everyone else I know to watch it, too–and happily settled in with lists and our latest reads, too. Eventually I dropped John off at work and made time for a mani-pedi, perusing the aisles at my favorite grocery store, and devouring the latest issues of Martha Stewart Weddings and Imbibe, along with some fabulous wedding blogs. I even found a forgotten episode or two of West Wing, which feels all the more exciting during this wild political season! John surprised me by finding his own way home, and we feel asleep not 15 minutes into Public Enemies

I wasn't born an early riser, and even though I enjoy the morning hours these days, I'm absolutely delighted when we manage to sleep in–and did we ever on Sunday! Still reveling in our full night's sleep, we grabbed his & hers caffeine at Trouble Coffee and a few final supplies for a decadent Sunday brunch, featuring poached eggs, roasted fingerling potatoes, avocado, wheat toast and espresso cups filled with raspberries. Then giggling at our good fortune, we climbed back into our freshly made bed to indulge in a nap! We ran a few errands in preparation of a rehearsal John's hosting tomorrow, and decided to make a truly beautiful Sunday supper, including a bottle of Bordeaux and a lemon tart. And almost better than the slumber party we were looking forward to that evening was doing whatever we pleased today!

Tell me–what were you up to this holiday weekend, and what are your plans for Labor Day?
