Chartreuse, be it green or yellow, probably isn't a top priority when you're building a home bar. Truthfully, if John hadn't created a delicious cocktail with the stuff, I might never have tried it at all, but this cocktail by Adam Rothstein of New York's Bobo has convinced me we need a bottle of the really good stuff!
Chartreuse Smash
10 mint leaves
1 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 tsp turbinado sugar
2 oz green Chartreuse
Spring of mint
Muddle mint, lemon juice and sugar in a cocktail shaker; add Chartreuse and fill with ice. Shake for 10-15 seconds, then strain into a glass filled with crushed ice and garnish with mint sprig.
Notes: Chartreuse is an herbal liquor produced by Carthusian monks in the French Alps, and is one of the oldest spirits still available. Not a single person knows the entire recipe, but rather one-third has been entrusted to three monks who have each taken a vow of silence, ensuring safe keeping of the propriety formula. The really good stuff I'm referring to is Chartreuse V.E.P., which has been extensively aged and is truly spectacular. Cheers!
