¡Olé!

I promised a recap of our blissful vacation, and I hope I won't bore you if a share a view of our quiet week in Mexico! We were so relaxed that we didn't even pull out a camera to take snapshots (I know, I know–what sort of blogger am I, anyway?! Luckily, things have changed little since last year, which you can see right here!), but I can still relive every sun-dappled moment when I close my eyes.

If you've been reading for a while, you can attest to our love of routine–hell, you probably know what I'm going to have for dinner on Friday night! So when it was time to plan a little getaway, even though we debated some far-flung destinations, we ultimately decided to head back to one of our favorite places on Earth–Hotel Secreto, in Isla Mujeres. The island requires a serious trek (from the airport, there's a taxi, a boat, and another taxi!), but the minute that John and I swung open the tall wooden gates of the hotel, all that travel was worth it.

Our mornings were devoted to breakfast in bed. We spent afternoons lounging underneath palm trees, using up two bottles of SPF 100+ and snacking on coconut from the trees overhead, with John reading Fermenting Revolution and me devouring one novel after another on my Kindle. My reading list included The Rules of Civility, which I couldn't put down, Some Girls: My Life in a Harem, which I couldn't wait to finish (a whole different thing), Heart of the Matter, a touch too serious to be a proper beach read, and Seating Arrangements, which I wished I hadn't read so quickly!

And we spent each evening holding hands, eating tacos, drinking beaded bottles of Victoria and Palomas, which I may never order again in San Francisco. John shocked the girls at our favorite little restaurant by consistently ordering a half dozen fish tacos or more, and every night we'd skip one more dip in the pool in favor of the cool white sheets in our lovely room. For the two of us, it was the perfect vacation.

Tell me, what's your dream getaway?

  9. This sounds like a great success! Love that you included your reads ;) but now I'm craving fish tacos like you wouldn't believe. Ethan and I have only vacationed once together (our mini-moon), but it opened my eyes to what I want for future vacations. A killer hotel, a stand-by restaurant, and lots and lots of lounging. Oh and someplace warm would be nice as well =)

  22. I think the fact that you adore your beloved routine so much is one of the things I adore most about you. Also, I feel the same way about many places: I can sit on my same special beach in cape cod year after year after year, and it never gets old.
