Sweet

I'll admit, last week was pretty weird–and I bet a lot of you felt that way, too. That midweek holiday meant two Mondays and two Fridays, back to back, but by the time Friday afternoon rolled around, I was ready for a cocktail and some fun. Luckily, we finally managed to pin down our dear friend AJ, and while I put away dishes and hid the giant bag of laundry in my closet, he and John bought limes, ice and lots of cheese. We had cocktails while we caught up on the finer points of the last two years, then dragged AJ to our favorite little Indian place for far too much food for three. By 10:30, we were all yawning–a far cry from the pact we'd made years ago that we couldn't get together on school nights, lest we never get to sleep–and tripped into bed.

John and I were up early on Saturday morning for no particular reason, and curled up with a movie before crawling out of bed and making breakfast. John whipped up an absolute feast–French omelettes, roasted fingerling potatoes, berries and freshly squeezed juice. We stayed close for the rest of the day, watching episodes of Frasier or sharing an armchair and an ottoman for reading and practice, respectively, until it was time to take John to work. Once I had the car (and the house) to myself, I caught up with my Mama and one of my best girlfriends, and suddenly home didn't seem so very far away at all. After giggling about wedding plans and sharing gossip, I poured myself a glass of wine and made a penne al arrabiata, perfect for the cool, rainy San Francisco night. I furtively watched some trashy TV and a dove headfirst into a new book, and didn't even realize how late it was until John called, ready to head home. I swung by the bar to grab him, and we curled up as thick rolls of fog poured in.

After our early Saturday, we slept in on Sunday quite by accident. I woke up to the sound of John's Les Six suite, and we decided to divide and conquer breakfast–I headed to the grocery store for fruit, yogurt and a croissant, while John cooked up his favorite tofu scramble. We sat down to breakfast together, then made a beeline back to bed where John promptly fell back asleep. I let him nap while I checked email and item off my to-do list, along with my favorite sections from the Sunday New York Times, but eventually had to roust him out of bed for a Sunday night shift. I honed my domestic skills, fixing a few loose buttons, before putting on my yoga clothes and getting into downward dog. It was the perfect cool weather for a makeshift paella and a glass of Rioja, and I curled up in an armchair under a big faux fur throw with a book after dinner, feeling wonderfully relaxed before the start of this new week.

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend? And what are you tackling this week?

  17. Your weekend sounds deliciously cozy and relaxing. I wish my weekend was that fun, David and I are house hunting yet again...and that itself is exhausting However we did enjoy a few good meals and lingered in bed late on Sunday until we both fell asleep...on separate occasions. Love that you got a chance to catch up with your mom...gossip with family is allowed! XO
