Isn't this a gorgeous photo? The gown is beautiful, but I actually love all the clutter–it's so honest and intimate.

A review of this weekend falls short without a quick update on the week that proceeded it–with our great friends in town, there was more adventure packed into every evening than we usually see all weekend! Baseball games, craft beer flights and warm weather were all on hand, and I was enjoying myself immensely until a violent but blessedly brief bit of food poisoning left me curled up in the bathroom on Wednesday night and laying in bed on Thursday. I took it easy on Friday, but after such a rough few days, I simply wasn't in the mood for our customary Indian feast. Instead, John very sweetly enjoyed Dino nuggets and flat ginger ale with me while we watched The Dilemma and turned in early.

After close to twelve hours of sleep, I woke up feeling close to myself on Saturday morning–but was still slow to get excited about eating! I made a poached egg on white toast, while John dug into a much more interesting vegan scramble, and I cautiously drank a little tea and freshly squeezed orange juice. While John practiced, I caught up on all the lovely things I'd missed this week, and eventually we decided to break for a little nap–one of the things John doesn't mind indulging in when I don't feel well. A little while later our friend Mark came over for afternoon cocktails, and after he and John threw back a few gin favorites (the classic Martini, a Corpse Reviver No. 2, a Mississippi Mule and a Bee's Knees), I was finally ready for my favorite Indian dishes. We settled in with takeout and started catching up on Mad Men–we have at least a half dozen episodes left to watch!

John was up early for a brunch shift at Zero Zero; I decided to take it easy until he called to let me know he was actually there 8 hours early, and would be working that evening! I jumped into a pair of jeans and met him in Hayes Valley for croissants and caffeine in the parklet outside Arlequin. We headed back to John's favorite studio so that he could practice and I could get a little work done, and eventually I decided to make the most of my recent stomach troubles by going swimsuit shopping! I headed to the Patagonia store, braving Hyde's wild hills, and snagged a black bikini perfect for activities a bit more strenuous than sunbathing. Then I headed home to practice a little yoga, clean up and put things in order before the new week.

Tell me, what were you up to this weekend? And what are you reading so far this summer? I've already started loading my Kindle with new books for our vacation, and I'd absolutely love your advice!

  2. Oh gosh, food poisoning is the worst. I have yet to get it (knock on wood), but my dormmate got sick with it our freshman year and it was crazy how sick she got. Ugh. Happy to hear you are feeling better and got to enjoy some Indian food :) I have so many books to recommend but I dont really know what you gravitate towards reading wise so I'll give a couple light reads:

Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith
    Emma Brown by Clare Boylan

I guess those are really "light" reads but they are good :)

  3. Love that gown, and love Adam Barnes' photography!
So sorry to hear that you've been so sick :( Though I'm glad you're doing better and made the best of it. I hope you keep taking it easy for a few days!
As for books, you know I'm going to suggest Mrs. Kennedy and Me! I can't speak about it highly enough :)

  4. Yikes! Glad you're feeling better (and what a wise woman, to go swimsuit shopping after being dehydrated! lol)

My weekend was expensive. I had a bad week last week, and partook in a bit of retail therapy. :]

I'm thinking about reading The Law of Dreams again when school is out, but my summer reading list include Rules of Civility and The Host. (don't judge!)

  6. Oh no! Your bout of food poisoning sounds awful. But I'm glad you turned it into a positive by going swimsuit shopping at the end. Ha! Love that. As for reading, I'm almost finished with The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. It's good--thought-provoking, motivating, interesting. A good summer read for sure.

  8. I hate food poisoning (who doesn't) it always seems to hit at the wrong time! As for books, have you ever read prodigal summer by Barbara Kingsolver? One of my all time favorites (and it follows the summer season, so it makes a great fair-weather read).

  19. As far as summer reads go (for your upcoming vaca and all), I really enjoyed Something Borrowed. Maybe you've read it, I'm not sure. I know they made a movie about it not too long ago with Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin. I loved it and I think it's the perfect, light beach read!
