Polka Dots and Moonbeams

Monday, April 9, 2012

I left the office Friday night with every intention of seeing a good friend's recital, but my tired eyes pointed me in a different direction–bed. I dozed and indulged in trashy reality TV until John called to tell me what a terrific concert it had been; I grabbed him and we made it in the door of our little Indian place just before they closed the kitchen. After the perfect supper, we headed home (and back to bed, thank goodness) and pulled The Blind Side from its Netflix packaging–can you believe that as a member of a football family, I still hadn't seen it?

I woke up to John banging around in the kitchen, convinced I'd slept until 2 in the afternoon (it was really 9:30). While he brewed coffee I whipped up Smitten Kitchen's amazing Gruyere toasts and soft boiled eggs (I also made them last week for dinner, they're that irresistible), and we had a little feast at the kitchen table. We crawled back into bed with our laptops to tackle some of John's term papers–soon we were knee deep in Jstor articles and sheets of yellow legal paper, which really is my favorite kind of afternoon. Eventually one of us pulled the other out of bed, and we put our shoes on for a walk down to the beach. We sat on the sea wall, suddenly level with the sand, and marveled at the changes in just the last few weeks while considering further strategy for John's final assignments. Eventually we decided it was time for a cocoa at Trouble and a trip for fresh fruits and veggies at Other Avenues, which John and I affectionately call "The Hippie Store". Before we knew it, we were both starving, and decided to keep it in the neighborhood at the inconspicuous Thai restaurant with the most delicious curries just down the street. We walked back hand-in-hand from our early supper, and when we found the wireless kept interrupting our viewing of The Fighter, we did what any two adults would–dragged the mattress into the living room and plugged directly into the modem.

Sunday morning started with a bang as John fumbled with his keys outside our door (I was sure, in my sleepy state, that it was a stranger letting himself in). He was loaded down with bags from our favorite grocery store, Andronico's, and had decided to stock the kitchen for the week, along with a few other errands he'd squeezed in, all before 9am! He proudly presented me with croissants still warm from the oven and an overflowing bowl of fresh berries and pineapple, and we had breakfast in bed–on the floor of the living room, of course! I tackled my to-do list, including a bit of clean up, while John headed to yet another recital (if you're in the Bay, you'll want to check out the fabulous free concerts at SFCM in the next few weeks). Once my chores were done, I braided back my hair for a little yoga in the living room, then pulled out my favorite chef's knife to play sous chef for John's delicious Sunday supper–chicken pot pie. In went parsnips, sweet potatoes, carrots, celery, a splash of white wine and plenty of herbs, all topped with a heavenly sheet of French puff pastry that he sprinkled with coarse sea salt. After a glass of wine and a little more brainstorming, we were ready for bed!

Tell me, what sort of celebrations did you attend this weekend? Any fabulous Sunday suppers?

  15. Ah that sounds like a lovely weekend Lena. Sometimes I pretend that I have your weekends. Haha. Mila had the stomach flu and Matt ended up in the emergency room with stomach pain. :( Everyone is okay now...but it definitely wasn't as glamorous as I wished it could have been.
