Shades of Gray

Thursday, March 31, 2011

There are few things better than a DIY bride, especially one with such impeccable style! This bride is a buyer for Magpie & Rye, so it's no wonder that when she designed the invitation suite to her intimate wedding, it was pretty irresistible. That bistro-inspired RSVP? I'm smitten!

a Short Story

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Most of you know that I'm a sucker for short dresses; while they're not very well suited to an evening wedding at the Four Seasons hotel, they're absolutely divine if you're throwing a daytime wedding or a more casual backyard celebration. BRIDES Magazine featured an adorable "Short Story" for their most recent issue, and this lace Tara Keely number absolutely stole the show!

P.S. You guys are one amazing bunch. Your comments on my post about finding your signature were so warm and thoughtful, and I'm so happy that each and every one of you come spend time with me here!

P.P.S. Annie of Marry You Me is nearly settled in London, but in the meantime, check out my classic guest post!

a Signature Scent

Monday, March 28, 2011

This weekend as I happily clicked through one beautiful wedding, birthday party and chic bridal shower after another, I had an absolutely terrible thought:
When are these fabulous events going to look passé?

I know that we can't imagine a time when ombré layer cakes, Anthropologie-inspired receptions and Confetti Systems won't look adorable, and perhaps the party planning trends of 2011 will stand the test of time. But as I saw wedding after wedding featuring chandeliers hung up in old oak trees, I worried that the beautiful bride in the photos would look back and think, "I wish my wedding looked more like my own."

I'm not suggesting that everyone who throws a rustic-chic barn wedding is a faker, because I know my fair share of girls with an ongoing love affair with mason jars, but I also know how difficult it can be to ignore the sway of someone else's gorgeous fête. So what I'd love to see is a return to your signature: your singular scent, your well-organized wardrobe and a wedding you'll look back on with your children in 50 years and say, "Well isn't that beautiful?"

The Usual, Mommy?

Saturday, March 26, 2011

I was tickled when I stumbled across this adorable illustration of Sally Draper mixing up cocktails for Mommy (aka Betty Francis, formerly Draper)-isn't it hysterical? We won't be serving too many of the drinks from this list, although the Manhattan and the Tom Collins will be on offer. Curious about what else John and I will be shaking up? Just check out the list below!

Bon Voyage, Annie!

Friday, March 25, 2011

The darling Annie of Marry You Me arrived in London bright and early this morning, and to celebrate, some of her biggest fans (myself included) put together well wishes for her journey across the pond! A big thank you to Jacin of Lovely Little Details for all the hard work and the gorgeous final product!

Clover Club

Pink and a touch sweet? Count me in! I've made sure we have all the ingredients we need for a Clover Club, since it's what I plan to sip tomorrow night at our housewarming party!

The Clover Club is a classic cocktail created in the 1880's; legend has it that the drink was named for a group of ramble rousers that tippled at the bar in the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel in Philadelphia. While the classic recipe calls for gin, raspberry syrup, lemon juice and egg white, John always adds a bit of dry vermouth to elevate this cocktail from the dredges of chick drinks.

Clover Club
1 1/2 oz of gin
3/4 oz of freshly squeezed lemon juice 3/4 oz of raspberry syrup
1/4 oz of dry vermouth
egg white

Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker; shake vigorously for 5-10 seconds. Then add ice and shake for 5-10 additional seconds; strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Notes: John and I like Plymouth gin for damn near every cocktail in the book; its graceful botanical notes are a perfect blend in cocktails. If you don't have a bottle on hand, feel free to use whatever gin you have in your liquor cabinet.

Raspberry syrup from Small Hand Foods is about as good as it gets, but if you can't get your hands on a bottle of Jen's gum syrup, simply make up some of your own! This recipe from the New York Times is simple and succinct.

Sweet Stamps

Thursday, March 24, 2011

It's hard to resist the loveliness of mismatched stamps, but I absolutely adore the look of coordinated colors or themes! These pink, floral beauties (along with Primele's Chasta calligraphy) are perfect for a garden fête, while invitations that pay tribute to your home states, the school where you fell in love or your favorite films are the perfect way to showcase your personalities even before guests open the envelope!

Icing on the Cake

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

As a flowergirl at my nanny's wedding, my best friend Kelly and I were caught in the act-someone snapped photos of us enjoying fingerfuls of icing from the wedding cake! It's still hard to resist swiping a bit of icing, especially when it's as lovely as this beautiful confection, although now I usually wait until I've been served!

a Sparkly Tuesday Shoesday

Tuesday, March 22, 2011

If you don't already enjoy Sparkle and Hay, get on over to Erin's gorgeous blog and take a peek at her rustic-chic perspective. This shot, snapped by Anna Sawin and styled by TRUE Event is just one of the beautiful photographs from Erin's wedding featured recently on Style Me Pretty-doesn't the girl have divine taste?

March Flowers

Monday, March 21, 2011

A stunning arrangement by Renee's Bouquet, a beautiful photo by Erin Hearts Court.

After one wildly rainy weekend here in San Francisco, I'm happy to say that I think I've finally recovered from our big move. We (ok, just me) slept in late, cooked delicious meals and enjoyed each others' company without any pressure to check things off the list-and boy, was it wonderful!

Tell me, how was your weekend?

Pola and Oliver

Sunday, March 20, 2011

Take a moment to catch your breath.

I know, I feel the same way. Whether a rooftop city wedding is your cup of tea or not, this celebration is so absolutely beautiful that it's hard not to fall in love!

Pola and Oliver chose Columbia University's St. Paul's Chapel for their traditional ceremony, which included a serenade from a gospel choir and a taxi cab exit. The Gramercy Park Hotel hosted their elegant rooftop reception and granted guests stunning views of Manhattan.

Pola wore an architectural J.Mendel gown, Badgley Mischka shoes and a stunning Oscar de la Renta pearl and crystal bracelet. Her classic veil is a Twigs & Honey creation. Oliver looked dapper beside his bride in a clean-cut Tom Ford suit.

Flowers by Brooklyn-based Saipua filled the rooftop space while guests enjoyed the sounds of Bon Musique. Cupcakes from Crumbs were a perfect treat as the evening came to a close, and KT Merry was on hand to capture each stunning moment.

Something Sweet

A teeny, tiny cake makes an irresistible treat-after seeing this photo, I'm tempted to try whipping up a few myself on this rainy Saturday! Hope your weekends are full of sweets and smiles!

a Lovely Lawn

Swooning over this snapshot of a gorgeous lawn wedding by Kate Headley. Wonderfully Gatbsy, don't you agree?

As a reminder, my blog and many others will be silent tomorrow in honor of Japan's recent tragedies. I hope you'll join ever ours, Utterly Engaged and For Japan With Love in mourning for their loss and supporting their recovery.

Emily Post's Coasters

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

John and I are planning a housewarming party to celebrate our quickie move, and I've been reading Emily Post on Entertaining to make sure I know all I need to about R.S.V.P.s and hors d'oeuvres! One thing Ms (Elizabeth) Post continued to mention was coasters-it's simply not polite to set your drink down any old place!

While charming cocktail napkins might have to do for our upcoming fête, I love the idea of these Simplesong coasters, spotted on 100 Layer Cake; they feature the recipe for the event's signature cocktail, a classic mint julep. It's a great way to let your guests know what they're sipping on and save the furniture!

For Japan, With Love

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

The devastation in Japan following an 8.9 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami stopped us all in our tracks; the images of so much destruction were heartbreaking. Lydia of Ever Ours and Lucia of Utterly Engaged weren't content to watch the news in stunned silence though, so they started an amazing relief effort and encouraged their fellow bloggers to spread the love.

All the donations to For Japan, With Love will go to ShelterBox,
which provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters. ShelterBox is already helping the Japanese recover from this staggering tragedy, giving out their large, green ShelterBoxes. Each is tailored to a particular disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.

In addition to donations, they have started a Bloggers' Day of Silence in honor of the tragedy. My blog and many others will be silent on Friday, March 18th, and I hope you'll join us in this show of support.

If you're interested in participating, contact Lydia {lydia@ever-ours.com} or Lucia {info@utterlyengaged.com} for more information.
