a Grasshopper

Friday, April 8, 2011

I have been desperate for real mint ice cream lately, and the obsession is threatening to make even my cocktails mint ice cream-inspired. While there's next to nothing particularly sophisticated about the combination of crème de cacao, crème de menthe and heavy cream (or mint chip ice cream, if your Friday night is wanting for poodle skirts and jukeboxes), there is something irresistibly kitschy about a Grasshopper.

Grasshopper

3/4 oz of green crème de menthe
1 oz of white crème de cacao
1 oz of heavy cream

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice; shake for 5-10 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Notes: While many recipes call for equal parts, a little crème de menthe goes a long way.

There's really no such thing as "top shelf" crème de cacao or menthe, so don't be embarrassed to pick up a $10 bottle at your local liquor store. This stuff will probably hide at the back of your liquor cabinet anyway, so ignore the horrifying ugly bottle and enjoy a bit of mint!
