On the first birthday John and I spent together as a couple, he decided that the perfect birthday cake for me would be red velvet. A Southern classic was only fitting, since I would be visiting his childhood Texas home. After John spent days baking one after the other, demanding perfect texture, color and consistency, he finally resorted to a local bakery! The cake they delivered was one of the most magical things I'd ever eaten; we decided right then and there that we'd serve red velvet cake on our big day. This image, c/o
