a Paloma

Friday, September 10, 2010

The Paloma, a beloved cocktail in Mexico, is the Margarita's little sister, replacing lime juice with grapefruit soda. While an organic grapefruit Blue Sky soda is nothing to sneeze at, I prefer my Paloma's with fresh squeezed juice and a touch of soda water.

The Paloma

2 oz white or reposado tequila
3 oz fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
1/2 oz fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 oz agave nectar
Soda water

Fill a Collins glass with ice. Combine tequila, juices and agave nectar in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for no more than 10 seconds. Strain into Collins glass and top with soda. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

Note: If you enjoy salt with your Margarita, feel free to rim the glass of your Paloma, as well. I don't like salt with the lighter flavor of grapefruit, but to each their own.
