the Negroni

Friday, August 13, 2010

Campari has long been one of my favorite apértifs-low in alcohol but high in flavor, I usually order it with soda water on summer afternoons. But Campari and soda just doesn't feel right in foggy, cool San Francisco, so since my cross-country move, I've been enjoying Negronis when I need a little bitter orange. The recipe for Campari is said to be known by only one person, but the recipe for a perfect Negroni is easy!

The Negroni

1 oz gin
1 oz sweet vermouth
1 oz Campari

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange peel.

While it's difficult to find, the use of Carpano Antica sweet vermouth in this and any other cocktail is truly wonderful. That Martini & Rossi that's been sitting in your liquor cabinet for ages will do in a pinch though.

Enjoy these last few summer weekends!

  1. my favorite cocktail! So good, although I like it will a little less vermouth. It took me almost two years but I found a bar in my little German city that knows what a negroni is, yum yum!
