No 553: Gone Glampin'

Saturday, June 12, 2010

Friends of mine went camping over the Memorial Day weekend; rather than s'mores and Spam, this couple encountered a brown bear! I don't need any more convincing that camping is not only low on creature comforts, but dangerous!

But campers persist, weaving stories about the beauty of nature and the Great Outdoors. If you're more Central Park than State, consider "glamping": glamorous camping. An oxymoron, perhaps, but one that's gotten considerable attention recently. As the Los Angeles Times explained, "the perks include a camp butler to build their fire, a maid to crank up the heated down comforter at nightfall and a cook to whip up bison rib-eye for dinner and French toast topped with huckleberries for breakfast." Sure, the amenities are nice, and I'm sure the views are outstanding. But what about the bears?

What do you think? Would you venture into the woods on your honeymoon?

  1. I can safely say this is the only way I would ever go camping! Looks absolutely beautiful. And I mean camp butler, who is going to say no to that?

  2. I think I would! I still can't get past the brown bear scare.
