No 513: the Doll

Wednesday, May 12, 2010

I'm singing the Doll today (Olympia, from Offenbach's Tales of Hoffmann) and my single greatest inspiration for the role has always been Eloise. She's a little mischievous, but she'll look up at you with wide, unblinking eyes and you'll forgive the worst of it. I try to give Olympia the same impish quality,
despite her mechanical restrictions!

This fantastic shoot, featured last August in Elle, is a wonderfully adult version of darling Eloise; Kemp Muhl plays the part to perfection, in my opinion. Her vacant stare is an inspiration for my own Doll!
