No 344: the New Year

Thursday, December 31, 2009

All right, I confess it-I think New Year’s is a foolish holiday! But perhaps it was an early childhood experience that soured me to New Year’s. My family was spending the holiday in Brasil, enjoying an escape from the freezing temperatures of the East Coast. My parents had New Year’s plans with a Saudi royal and his wife, and were sure that hanging out in their full floor penthouse in Sao Paulo with their offspring would be a good enough New Year’s plan for their children, ten and eight at the time.

I had never seen more than one nanny in one place (we were so bourgeois), but there were two per child, one of whom never rose in the endless hours we were trapped on the top floor. The other, “Fossil”, was a malnourished monster who refused all food or drink with the exception of white rice and Coca Cola classic. To add insult to injury, when fireworks finally rolled around at midnight, we weren’t allowed onto the veranda or near the windows to watch them. What Charlie and I did not understand at the time (and which would only become clear after 9/11) was that we were ringing in the New Year with Osama bin Laden’s kin, and a trip outside would have been very, very bad news.

And maybe, one terrible New Year’s at age ten was enough to turn me, but I don’t think that’s quite it. It’s amateur night, when liquor laypeople drink vodka-cranberries or vodka-Red Bulls or vodka-sodas. It’s always supposed to be “the Best Night of the Year!!!!” but it’s usually only as fun as any other and all the more disappointing for the hype.

And so this year, John and I will be enjoying a quiet evening in. I think we’ll be making steak-frites and drinking a delicious bottle of bubbly. Hopefully we’ll be asleep between the Eastern and Central time zones’ celebration, and that will be the perfect beginning to 2010.

No 343: the Anniversary

My grandparents were married on December 31st in a beautiful New Years Eve celebration; Since then, I've always been fond on weddings which ring in the New Year. They guarantee people plans and a great reason to dress up, and you have a built in anniversary party for the rest of your life! Photo c/o theknot.

On a more personal note, we think of you often, Pepe, and I can't imagine a more beautiful afterlife. With love.

No 342: the Big Day Bicycle

Wednesday, December 30, 2009

For my 21st birthday, John gave me a baby blue beach cruiser much like this one. When I first saw this image, captured by Elizabeth Messina, I thought, "That could be John and I in his linen suit!" Ruffles at the hip aside, I'm sure we'll find a way to incorporate bicycles into our big day. I love the idea of Save-the-Dates/engagement photos featuring our bicycles, like the charming scene in Wedding Crashers where Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams go for a ride in scenic Maryland. It's cycle time as I type, with John clomping around in his cycling shoes!

No 341: the Rake

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

Forget what I'm wearing for New Year's-I can't wait to put John in a tuxedo and parade him around for my viewing pleasure. These photos are from The Rake, a stunning men's magazine which is the "modern voice of classic men's elegance". There's an absolutely delightful article on formal dressing with advice for the man in your life and eye candy for you.

No 340: the Centerpiece

This centerpiece from the incomparable Martha Stewart is just gorgeous! Papier-mâché fruits like pears, apples and lemons painted white give your table a clean, polished look with just enough whimsy. How delightful the winter issue is!

No 339: the Holiday Party

Monday, December 28, 2009

I have fallen head over heels for Bash Eco-Events, a Los Angeles event planner with a focus on sustainability, and you know I can't help but feature her exciting and modern designs. Devoted wedding blog readers (not just mine, but all those other, wonderful sites listed to your right) might remember the "Where the Wild Things Are" bachelorette weekend designed for Utterly Engaged, an online wedding magazine with gorgeous and useful content.

This gorgeous dessert table, created by her partner, Yes, Please, for a TRUNKSHOW event, could be easily repurposed into a perfect winter wedding treat display. The crisp, creamy whites against the velvet texture of the greenery are simply beautiful.

No 338: the Ice Storm

I love this photograph from AGAiMAGES, a New York based photography studio with a fabulous photojournalistic perspective. I am obviously desperate for some major winter weather; 50 degrees and cloudy simply isn't cutting it for Christmas!

No 337: Real Wedding: Joanna and Kevin

Sunday, December 27, 2009

Joanna and Kevin were married in New York's Little Italy in this gorgeous time between Christmas and New Year's. I particularly loved the march the entire party made from the church to SPQR restaurant where the reception was held, accompanied by the Red Mike Festival Band. Well, the march and Joanna's perfect little fur shrug. Lovely photos by Jocelyn Filley.

No 336: the 15th Anniversay Issue

Saturday, December 26, 2009

For the love of all things Martha-it's the 15th Anniversary edition of Martha Stewart Weddings! Hitting stores on Monday, December 28th, it features 15 years of "Good Things" and its very first same-sex celebration. Cake by genius Sylvia Weinstock and cover photograph by Johnny Miller.

No 335: the Christmas Tree

While ours is a little more green and gold than silver and white, I absolutely love this Martha Stewart tree, and the little tubs for gifts are so adorable that I could fall over. This holiday decor is the perfect combination of Christmas and wedding, and all these beautiful photographs serve as phenomenal inspiration for a winter celebration. Wouldn't a Christmas wedding, scheduled when everyone is free from work anyway, be a perfect time to have an intimate family affair?

No 334: Happy Christmas!

No 333: the Final Preparations

Thursday, December 24, 2009

John and I are both wrapping the last of our gifts, and excitement seems to be everywhere, at least in our little abode. It's almost Christmas! I don't care if it's cliched, I am just as delighted by Christmas as a demi-adult as I was growing up, and sharing it with the man I love multiplies my joy by leaps and bounds.

Image c/o we heart it.

No 332: the Congratulations!

The most joyful "Congratulations" to two of my favorite customers who very recently got engaged-Karen and Brian! I am so glad you're enjoying every moment of this life together, and celebrating your love despite all else.

I chose this photograph, from Tiffany and Co. because John loved the image so much. I think he saw a bit of his future self in it, and what girl can resist that?

No 331: the Reprint

I don't, as a matter of principal, like to re-post someone else's blog content, but this was too perfectly written to let any of my dearest readers miss out on it.

C/o From "I Will" to "I Do".

What To Do If He Doesn't Propose Over The Holidays

There’s always a lot of talk around this time of year about all the engagements that take place around the holidays but even if you’re expecting a proposal on or around Christmas and New Year’s that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen. (Take it from me – I thought a proposal was going to happen on many a Christmases – and I’m Jewish!)

If a little blue (or black) box is not in your stocking or under the tree or a ring isn’t "floating" in your glass of champagne on December 31st do not make a scene and freak out – especially in front of your boyfriend.

You don’t know what his plans are for an engagement. Maybe he didn’t want to propose at such an obvious time. Maybe he’s still saving money for your ring. Or maybe he’s not ready yet.

Causing a fight and making a scene will not force him on his knee. Remember what happened to Charlotte on Sex & the City when she yelled at Harry to propose? (I know they eventually did get married, but at first he broke up with her.)

So here’s my advice – and yes, I realize I’ve already said “I do” – you can hope all you want but don’t pout about not getting engaged over the holidays. When he finally does propose you’ll forget about the times you waited for a ring because it’s now on your finger and you’ll be so excited it won’t have mattered that it took longer than you would have liked. And even though 2010 is not a leap year, there’s no reason you can’t propose to him if you want to. It is the 21st century and you are a modern gal, right?

No 330: the "Santa" Cokes

Remember those Coca Cola commercials when you were growing up featuring the world's jolliest Santa drinking a frosty cola? The power of advertising worked on John and I, and we've been stocking the fridge with those petite glass bottles for weeks now. Nothing compares to Coke in a glass bottle (as discussed in this New York Times article) and while it's been tied with the holidays, I love the idea of galvanized steel tubs full of 'em for a rustic, backyard reception. Throw in a case of Shiner Bock and John would be a very happy man.

No 329: the Return to Blogging

Wednesday, December 23, 2009

My apologies for the long sojourn from blogging-with a week of non-stop performances and then a week of internet outage in my Christmas-ready home, La Petite Coquin was much neglected. But I'm back, and so glad.

So with Christmas just around the corner, John and I have decked out the apartment in holiday finery: a wreath, decorated with juniper berries and pine cones on the front door, lengths of garland hanging over the armoire which faces our bed and a perfect 6 foot pine tree which we lugged back to the homestead on a bus! It's lit with white lights (the only appropriate choice for Christmas lights, unless the colored bulbs are enormous and circa 1956) and we found gold balls of every texture to twinkle. My parents brought some of my favorite ornaments, and we've added a few this season, including a wonderful DIY gingerbread couple, a gift from John's phenomenal Aunt Jenny.

In the very few days before Noel, I'll be featuring some wonderful, wintery wedding treats, and expect much more through the holiday season! Lovely photo by Amanda, one of the photographers on Millie Holloman's team.

No 328: the Elegant Bride

Thursday, December 10, 2009

I love this "Stepford bride" editorial for Elegant Bride, featured on the Cinderella Project. The perfect Cape Cod, outfitted with overstuffed white couches and plenty of clamming gear, would be the ideal location for an early summer or fall wedding. Besides, I adore a man in seersucker.

No 327: the Rosemary-Wrapped Centerpieces

Monday, December 7, 2009

Kristen Grinnell, a talented wedding photographer, snapped this shot at Meghan and Nevin's nuptials at the Figueroa Mountain Farmhouse in Southern California. All the greenery in our home these days has reinforced the power of scent, and rosemary is one of my favorite herbs. I could flavor absolutely everything with rosemary, and I adore the idea of rosemary-wrapped vases for beautiful, deconstructed centerpieces. Just be sure not to feature highly-scented flowers; the combination may be overwhelming!

No 326: the Aaron Neville-Eggnog Night

Sunday, December 6, 2009

Aaron Neville-Eggnog night was a success! There's a half-frozen pitcher of homemade eggnog in the freezer and we can all do a passable impression of Aaron Neville's "Oh Holy Night", not to mention a full recycle bin, the true measure of a good party. We had fabulous hors d'oeuvres: proscuitto-wrapped mozzarella topped with basil, goat cheese and walnut crostini drizzled with honey, pâté de campagne and brie, not to mention a delicious, homemade gingercake. Besides the eggnog, we sipped Airmails and Hemingway daiquiris, and had a wonderful evening.

It made me think of how delightful an hors d'oeuvre reception could be: delicious, bite-sized nibblets rather than a heavy, plated dinner. No assigned seating and plenty of scintilating conversation (if your guests are such chatters). And did I mention that eating bite-sized food is so much fun?

No 325: the Hansel and Gretel

The first show of my big performance week is today (although it still feels like Saturday night to me), and I'm actually more excited about Aaron Neville-Eggnog night, our (soon-to-be annual) holiday party. But tutus always get me reved up, and I have a pretty outrageous one lined up for this afternoon in shades of celery green. Don't worry, I'll explain more about Aaron Neville-Eggnog night later.

Gorgeous photo found on Weheartit.

No 324: the Baby's Breath

Saturday, December 5, 2009

Polly Wreford, a talented interior and lifestyle photographer, took this stunning photo which I spotted on Santa Barbara Chic. I love the ephemeral quality of a bathtub full of baby's breath, but this could be beautifully translated into simple, inexpensive centerpieces: silver julep cups, filled with baby's breath, perhaps tied with a white silk ribbon. Just today I saw a table of white containers of every size and height, each filled with a single type of white flower, and they were magnificent.

No 323: the Sweet, Wintery Treats

Friday, December 4, 2009

All that talk about snuggling up in my fur coat made me yearn for the snow I won't be seeing this year on Christmas. Instead, I decided to bring it to us in the form of Amy Atlas' gorgeous dessert buffet created for an Elegant Bride and the Wedding Library's Wedding Event at the New York Palace. This lavender wonderland brings all the beauty of snow without the treacherous driveways or filthy slush!

No 322: the Fur Coat

The wearing of fur is surrounded with moderate controversy, but after posting two consecutive weddings featuring gorgeous fur capelets, I decided that I too could proudly pull out my fur in San Francisco. There's a reason women wore fur coats-they're incredibly warm (not to mention soft and delicious). My love of fur even earned me a particularly delightful nickname, and since my teens, I've collected 6 coats, 2 fabulous trapper hats and one killer pair of black après ski boots.

Jane Birkin looks absolutely adorable in this coat (red fox, if I had to guess), and that straw basket she carried everywhere inspired Hermès' Birkin bag, named for the actress, model, singer and one of my dearest fashion icons. I'll confess, it was photographs of Birkin's bangs that inspired my recent hair cut, and it was this photo that came to mind when I was given a fantastic fur peacoat I'll be wearing all winter long! Photo c/o this is glamorous.

No 321: the Marriage Certificate

Thursday, December 3, 2009

Wiley Valentine produces some of the most beautiful and creative papers, but these marriage certificates are among their most divine. While signing one won't make it official, they're a stunning keepsake and family heirloom. Available on their Etsy shop, along with lots of other wonderful holiday stationery, these certificates are custom created and could easily be designed to coordinate with your invitation suite. I absolutely adore the seafoam font and the banner detailing on the "Classic" certificate.

No 320: the Nutcracker

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

December always makes me yearn for Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, but singing the Dew Fairy this year seems to have made the desire stronger. The first photograph, taken by Paul Kolnik, is of a performance of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker by New York City Ballet with Sofiane Sylve playing the role of Dewdrop. The following photographs are by Rachel Papo, a photographer with the most keen eye for capturing the beauty of ballet since Edgar Degas, who photographed fittings for the production weeks earlier.

With so many hours logged in costumes fittings and dressing rooms lately, and seemingly endless hours in the next two weeks, I thought I would apologize in advance if my blogging drops off. The next two weeks will entail: 1 orchestral rehearsal, 1 sitzprobe and 1 dress rehearsal of Dido and Aeneas, 3 SFCM performances of Hansel and Gretel, 4 run-out performances of Hansel and Gretel, 1 musical rehearsal with a passel of children for Hansel and Gretel and 2 performances of Dido and Aeneas. Plus my parents, grandmother and favorite cousin arrive in San Francisco and an enormous Greek family reunion commences. That's it, kids-the two longest and most exciting weeks of my life are approaching. And if my blogging sucks, I promise I'll make up for it with really great pictures of my Dew Fairy costume.

No 319: the 25 Days of Christmas!

John got Christmas started very early this year (no surprise, since all of my shopping was done before November) and presented me with my first gift tonight-a piano! It's absolutely beautiful, and I feel like the most blessed woman on Earth.
